TWENTY-FOUR: THE LAB

("The Mind Flayer" I)

PENNY WALKED ALONGSIDE STEVE, BEHIND THE KIDS AND FRANK. Penny and Steve's shoulders were inches apart, making both of the teens silently wish that they could touch.

"You know, I saw Max and Lucas hold hands, back in the bus," Penny revealed happily to the boy pointing her flashlight ahead of her.

Steve looked at the girl beside him, then at the two ahead, and gave them a smile. "Really? That's kind of adorable."

"It is," Penny agreed, ignoring the elephant in the room—the elephant in the woods. She decided to talk about something else. "I found it pretty brave what you did back there."

"I mean, someone had to do it. Plus, I wanted to keep everyone safe," Steve shrugged looking ahead of him.

"Don't be so humble. You're a hero, Harrington," Penny remarked playing with the cord of her Walkman. She turned her head to the side and looked at Steve. Looking at him kept making her think about the kiss. She had only ever kissed two other guy, but something was different about kissing Steve. It felt different. There was something special about it. It was perfect, and Penny felt like she was on cloud 9, during those few seconds. If she could, Penny would kiss him again. She was starting to realize that maybe she didn't just like Steve in a friend way.

Steve blushed slightly at her compliment, but because it was so dark out, Penny couldn't see. "Well I didn't do it alone."

Penny gave him a toothless smile. "We make a pretty good team, Bat-man."

"We do, Catwoman," Steve agreed with a nod. Steve chuckled at the name. "Still don't know why you want to be called Catwoman."

"Uh, because she's awesome," Penny responded like it was obvious. "Plus, Robin is the sidekick. I don't wanna be a sidekick, you know?"

Steve nodded at her words. "Well, you're not."

"Good," the girl commented, with a small smile on her face. She decided to muster up enough courage and confront the boy about what happened earlier. "Hey, I'm sorry about earlier."

Steve looked at her and frowned a little at the revelation.

"That was weird, like, I don't know. It was just a don't die kiss. I didn't mean it in that way. You're one of my best friends, man. Kissing you was not supposed to happen at all. That was inappropriate and unneeded and I am really sorry," Penny tried her best to sound convincing.

"Penny, it's fine. I kissed you, too. I guess we both got caught up in the moment. We were literally face to face. It just happened, you know," Steve stated, also trying to sound convincing.

"Exactly. But it wasn't a bad kiss. I'm starting to understand what all those girls were talking about in the hallway. 'Oh, Steve, he's just the greatest kisser ever'," Penny mocked in a voice that sounded like some damsel in distress, looking down at her beat up converse. The shoes had been through a lot in the past few years.
