FIFTY-SEVEN: THE MISSING PIECE

("The Nina Project" I)

PENNY HOPPER WAS IN THE MIDST OF A DREAM WHERE SHE AND HER BEST FRIEND, STEVEN SPIELBERG, WERE WORKING ON A FUTURE OSCAR-WINNING MOVIE WHEN SOUND CAME FROM DUSTIN'S WALKIE-TALKIE. She opened her eyes frantically, due to the sudden noise. As she looked around at her surroundings (a bunch of teenagers sleeping) Penny groaned realizing she was just dreaming. The girl lifted her head off of Steve's shoulder and removed his arm that rested on her shoulder, hearing Eddie call for Dustin. Penny let out a yawn, before making her way over to the curly-haired boy's walkie. She picked up the device and lifted up the antenna—right after Eddie said, "Earth to Dustin".

"Hey, Eddie," Penny greeted kindly. "This is Penny. Did you need something?"

"Hopper! Hey," Eddie greeted back. "Um, I'm gonna need a food delivery, like, real soon, unless you want me going out into the world."

Penny awkwardly chuckled. "Please don't do that. Stay right where you are... seriously. We'll try to get to you as fast as we can. Don't you worry. How was the food by the way?"

"Great!" Eddie cheered. Penny smiled at his words. "Listen, um... can you pick me up a six-pack? I know, it's stupid as shit drinking right now—"

"That it is," Penny muttered under her breath. She listened as Eddie continued.

"...but a cold beer would really calm my jangled nerves."

"Eddie, you don't have to resort to drinking to solve all your problems. Listen to music instead," Penny suggested.

"That won't work for me. But I appreciate the advice," Eddie remarked. Based on how he sounded, Penny believed his words—they weren't true.

Suddenly, she felt a tap on her shoulder. Penny jumped at the sound and ended up falling flat on her ass. She groaned, putting a hand on her forehead, at the hard impact.

"My ass!" she exclaimed in a pained voice. Penny slowly turned around to see  Nancy with a very apologetic face.

The Wheeler girl squinted her eyes, in embarrassment. "Um, I'm so sorry."

Penny waved her hand dismissing her words, trying to ignore the pain she felt in her butt.

"No, you're fine," Penny lied in a very unconvincing voice. She winced a bit, trying to stand up. Once she lifted herself off the ground, she put her hands on her hips.

Nancy gave her an awkward smile. "So... Max is missing."

Penny's eyes widened in surprise.

"Hopper," called Eddie from the walkie. "You okay?"

Penny spoke into the device, "Eddie, I'm sorry, but I have to go. Something came up. I'll call you back. That's a promise."

Penny dropped the device on the ground and followed Nancy over to where Dustin and Frank were sleeping, trying to tune out Eddie calling for her.
