THRITY: SUMMER OF '85

("Suzie, Do You Copy?" I)

PENELOPE HOPPER DROVE DOWN THE STREETS OF HAWKINS, INDIANA, IN HER ORANGE VOLKSWAGEN VAN. She bopped her head to the beat of "We Got the beat". She had one hand on the steering wheel, and the other was holding the hand of her boyfriend.

The bright sun shone on the glass of the windows. Steve's sunglasses—that Penny stole from him—shielded her eyes from the bright light. She took a turn on the road and hummed to the song playing in the car. This was one of her favorite tapes. She made it a month ago. She called it "Summer of '85. Since this was the last summer Penny and her friends would be together, she made sure to make it memorable, and of course that included making a tape in a way to sort of document memories; she also filmed their summer.

So far, they had seen movies at the new theater in the new mall. They also went shopping in said mall. They went to the pool, hung out at the arcade, and ate junk. They started buying stuff for college. They even took a weekend trip down to Chicago, with adult supervision of course.

Sounds of laughter distracted Penny from the song. Her friends were currently laughing at something Charlie said. Margaret's laughter was louder than all of theirs.

"It's true though," Chris said through his laughter. Beth leaned her head on her boyfriend's shoulder, still laughing. A few months ago, Beth revealed she was dating someone. That someone happened to be the boy Penny danced with at the Halloween party. Of course Penny didn't care, because she was with Steve, but the girl was still shocked.

"What is?" Steve questioned turning his head around to inspect the others.

Charlie looked at the others—who had become silent after Steve piped up—and they burst into laughter again.

"Hello?" Steve called out, getting annoyed at the laughing teens.

"If you go bald, you're gonna be a real life Popeye. You know, because you work at Scoops," Frank acknowledged Steve's question through a fit of laughter.

Penny chuckled a bit at the revelation. "That's-That's true."

"It's not that funny," Steve said to the others in the car defensively.

"It kind of is. I think that hair is stripping your ability to think," Charlie chuckled. He lifted up the collar of his band tee to his mouth, to hold in his laughter.

"That's mean," Margaret scolded, hitting the boy's arm.

"Madge!" Charlie yelled.

"Sorry," the girl apologized looking down at her shoes.

"It was mean," Penny agreed. She took another turn and drove into the parking lot of the Hawkins Pool. When she found a good place to park. Penny turned off the car and picked up her backpack. She opened the door, and got out of the car. The others did the same, picking their up bags and any other things that they needed.
