TWENTY-SEVEN: STEVE CAN'T FIGHT TO SAVE HIS LIFE

("The Gate" II)

"JUST BE CAREFUL, PLEASE," PENNY PLEADED TO EL AND CHARLIE. The two of them nodded at her words, nerves filling their bodies as they thought about how they could die going to the lab. Well, Charlie mostly thought about how surprising it was that he convinced Jim to let him go with him and El.

"We'll try our best." As he said that, Charlie pulled Penny in for a hug and let go to see Margaret standing next to him.

"I'll see you later," the raven-haired girl said to him, though it sounded more like a question than a statement.

"Yeah," he sighed. Charlie slowly kissed her forehead, before walking to the car. He opened up the passenger side and climbed into the back.

Penny watched her brother leave, worrying for his safety. She shifted her attention from him, only to notice Margaret blushing. The curly-haired girl gave her a smirk. She turned her attention back to her sister.

"Love you, El."

"Love you, too," she revealed.

Penny smiled at the young girl. She walked back to Steve's side, as Mike approached Eleven, with Margaret following behind her.

Steve wrapped an arm around her shoulder, knowing she was worried for her loved ones. "They're gonna be okay, Pen."

"I hope so," Penny remarked with a frown. Although, her face lit up at the sight of Eleven and Mike leaning into each other. "Steve, they're about to kiss."

"Really?" The boy also smiled at the interaction and looked at the girl beside him with adoration.

That girl quickly rolled her eyes at her dad who had interrupted the kiss. He couldn't let the poor girl have this moment.

Upset, Eleven walked to the car and got in.

After she did that, Jonathan backed out of the driveway. Jim followed the boy. Once they all left, Penny let out a deep sigh. She couldn't be sad now. She had four middle schoolers, one junior, and an idiot who she had a crush on to take care of.

PENNY HELD ONE END OF A SWADDLED DEMO-DOG, AS DUSTIN BEGAN EMPTYING THE FRIDGE.

"All right," he panted. Dustin pointed inside the fridge. "It should fit now."

"Is this really necessary?" Steve questioned the boy.

"Yeah, I don't think Mrs. Byers would like to see this demon spawn in her refrigerator," Penny affirmed.

"This is a ground-breaking scientific discovery. We can't just bury it like some common mammal, okay? It's not a dog," the curly-haired boy defended.
