SIXTY-FIVE: HOLD ON TO THE ONES YOU LOVE

(Papa III)

"SO I DONT KNOW?" Charlie shrugged. He and Penny were sitting down on the grass in some random field in Hawkins. The others were busy doing other things, preparing to fight Vecna. Penny and Charlie could've done the same, but they just wanted to talk and distract themselves from their problems. "I want to be with her more than anything, but she's right."

Penny tilted her head, raising a brow. "Is she? Or are you just scared?

Charlie just stayed quiet, drumming his fingers on his leg.

The girl shook her head slowly. She put her hand on his shoulder, and the blond looked at her. "You know, sometimes you have to take risks. You may not want to, but it can be better to take risks, in a way. It's scary, but I would rather try than not try at all."

"What do I do?" questioned her brother. Penny had never seen him so conflicted—so lost.

"Be honest with her."

"But I was—"

"No. You weren't. You said the baby answer. It's more than being in love, blondie. Tell her that you want to fight for her and that what you and Dawn have is nothing. If you really want to be with her you have to show her. Am I making sense?"

Charlie nodded, watching Dustin, Eddie, Frank, and Margaret play fight with their makeshift shields. "Yeah. You are."

"Good," Penny smiled. She turned her head to the side to see Steve and Robin talking. Her thumb pointed in their direction. "I'm gonna go check on Steve and Robin. Are you good here by yourself?"

"Yeah," Charlie nodded. "I'm good. You go ahead."

"Okay," Penny said softly before pulling him in for a hug. Charlie held on tight but let go so she could leave. Penny trudged through the grass, her shoes rustling the grass. When she had finally made it to Steve and Robin, the two friends greeted her, as she seated herself in between them.

"How are you, Pen?" asked Robin, her brow raised.

"Exhausted, scared," she shrugged. She frowned at her. "How are you?"

"I've had better days."

Penny laughed at her words. "Yeah. Well, how's everything coming along?"

"Pretty good," Steve answered. "We finished with our stuff."

"Well that's good," Penny uttered, using the blue scrunchie around her wrist to tie her hair back. She looked across the field at the smiling faces of everyone. This was the only time that week they were able to relax and laugh and be kids again. She focused her eyes on the others, "Do you guys think that we can stop him? I mean, actually stop him?"
