The team ended up losing. Not just losing but coming last. The last girl, Hally, jogged slowly to the pastel blue chalked line Mr Omar had drawn. She was panting as she drew nearer and nearer, completely shattering Kaleb's hopes of not only ranking first place at this point but at least coming in third place, but Hally had been out taken by a boy in the other team who's team mates all burst into applause as he crossed the line.
Sana stood between Nix and I, covering her face with the excess fabric of her hijab to hide the anger formed on her face. Her fist resting beside her, or maybe the better word would be, raging beside her was gripping her pants with such force that I feared they'd rip.
"That idiot, at least when I was captain we came second place." Her voice was muffled, a bit broken but still audible. She continued mumbling to herself, "And why did she take P.E if she can barely run?! She's literally jogging. Jogging! Oh god, give me the patience. Give me Sabr." Nix and I looked at each other and tried our best to not burst out laughing. Clearly Sana was more competitive than imagined.
Kaleb came over to where the girls stood, looking fairly disappointed. "We lost."
"Yeah, that was abundantly clear, thank you very much." Sana snapped and looked up at him. "If it was me wh-"
"Don't" Kaleb held his hand out to shush her.
"Shut up! I have every right to be mad. God, you're so irritating I can't!" She crossed her arms, turned on her heels and stomped away. The sound of her footsteps gradually faded and the gym door creaked and as she pulled it then slowly shut behind her.
Kaleb stood before us, looking defeated.
"I'm sorry guys, sometimes my brain really doesn't work." He mumbled.
"Kaleb, it's just P.E, it doesn't matter, you know?" Nix assured him.
"I know but I can't help it, I'm just too competitive." He shrugged and continued staring at the ground.
Nix looked at me for help and I shrugged. What could I do? I barely knew the dude.
"Help him." She mouthed. I narrowed my eyes at her vigorously shook my head but Nix continued pleading and I finally gave in, scoffing, and sending Nix a dirty look.
"Kaleb, come on, we have classes to attend, can't mope around all day." Both Of us looped our arms around him and dragged Kaleb into the big gymnasium.
"I-I think I'm just going to skip second period and come back after lunch." He grabbed his water bottle from the wooden bench and walked out of the gym.
"Wow, I've never seen anyone so upset over a game." I looked out the door he had gone through in disbelief. Nix raised her eyebrows and scoffed. "What?"
"You left Secretum when we lost the hoola hoop battle against Skit."
I eyed Nix with shock, "Um do you know how humiliating that was? Losing a hoola hoop battle against Skit. Two vs. one and yet we still lost."
"Whatever, clearly you are just as competitive as Sana and Kaleb." She shook her head while grinning and left the gym. I grabbed my jar of water, yes, jar because there were extra jars and Del didn't want Nix and I to waste money on buying a water bottle so not only were we using grocery bags as a substitute for backpacks, we were also using jam jars as water canteens.
I trailed after Nix and we headed to the girls' change room.
We walked into separate cubicles and began taking off our clothes. There was some chattering amongst the other girls but it was mostly empty since the other teams had finished first and gotten to leave early.
