Just some crazy theory I made that connects the stories of many fandoms I'm in. The tags explain the series/franchises used in this theory, so be prepared for a long one.
Okay, so we know that the fictional universe has been heavily influenced by fairies, even after the fairy era ended, with some humans even having fairy magic in their DNA (and we can guess that Sci-Twi has fairy magic in her genetics, which we explained that and more in the last part).
However, when the fairies were thriving, there was another supernatural species dominant as well, a species that also influenced humans.
Mermaids.
And for those people who really don't know what a mermaid is (which we should all know), mermaids are pretty much half-fish that have a human body that turns into scales at the waist. Many known mermaids include Merliah Summers, Ariel, Nori, Melody, Isla, etc.
So how have mermaids found their way into the modern world?
Well, during the beginnings of humans, if you remember in Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia, mermaids and fairies were all living in the same world, as shown by Nori.

And while there were less mermaids during the 19th century, they were still around, as shown by Ariel. However, humans were beginning to think that they didn't exist.

And, like fairies, mermaids became less and less shown to humans, and mermaids are just known as myths by this point, leading to Isla in Dolphin Magic, since Barbie seems pretty shocked and in disbelief when she first sees Isla transform, having been led to believe all her life that mermaids didn't exist.
