Imagine that you have the bearings lined up in three rows of three. You simply weigh row 1 vs row 2. If one is heavier than the other you know which the heavy ball-bearing is in. If not, then it is in the third row. On the heaviest row weigh any two of the balls. If one is heavier than the other you have found the heavy one! If not, the heavy ball-bearing is the one you didn't weigh.
