Tell me about your problems, how
They're "personal." Sit me down in the
Living room, on that faded red leather couch-
The one my baby self nearly ruined- and patronize me in
Every way you can. Talk down to me-
"We still love you; nothing will change;
Don't worry; you'll still see us both;
We don't hate each other; we're not in love anymore"-
And pretend like I'm believing you. Use words like
"Honey," "sweetie," "darling," and make this sound like
Some joyous occasion. Ignore me when my breathing gets
Heavy, reality sets in, and my eyes turn white.
Pat me on the back.
Call me "sport" for being so "understanding" of your
"Personal" problems. Tell me about your divorce, how it
Won't affect me at all. And I'll tell you how I knew
This was coming.
