His obsession

New lead

I woke up at about 10:00 to the smell of bacon and burnt toast. Confused I got up and went downstairs and found Roman in the kitchen frantically trying to make breakfast.

"Oh hey, I was just trying to make us breakfast, I thought I would do something to help take out mind off everything but it's not going well." He announced gesturing to the pile of burnt toast by the toaster.

"The bacon seems to be going well though" he added and we both laughed. It felt good to be able to actually laugh though, for a few seconds I forgot about the whole situation, for a few seconds everything seemed ok again.

That wore off pretty fast though and quickly turned into guilt for being able to be happy when Skylar was still missing. I knew we had to move on eventually but it didn't feel right moving on without her so we just fell into an awkward silence.

"Cooking never really was my thing," Roman stated, ending the silence. "It was always Olivia who cooked the best meals for us but she hasn't cooked since..." he trailed off not wanting to say out loud what we were both thinking. Olivia initially cooked for us but slowly lost motivation and focused more on her work to the point where she would leave early morning and come back really late. She hadn't cooked in ages so we usually ended up getting takeaway or sometimes I would try and cook something.

Roman turned around again and went back to cooking the bacon not wanting to say anymore. I took that as my cue to leave and went to the living room to watch tv as a distraction.

Suddenly, the phone started ringing and I picked it up praying to god it was the police with some new information. I knew it was unlikely but a girl can dream.

"Hello this is Kate, we have an update on Skylar's case we thought you might want to know, I'm on my way over to tell you in person but just thought I should let you know on the phone that I was coming first and just make sure that you were at home."

"Yeah me and Roman are home." I responded while trying to make sense of the fact that they actually found something.

They had new information, this was good, maybe this time they could actually find her!

I tried not to get my hopes up too much as I ended the call and went to tell Roman the good news.

"But what if it becomes a dead end again?" He asked, clearly not wanting to get his hopes up too early.

"I don't know but this is the first lead they have had in ages, what if they are actually close to finding her?"

He didn't respond, just nodded his head and turned back towards the bacon.

"Well the bacon is ready." He said with a smile. I smiled back as I took the bacon into the living room. We watched whatever was on the tv not really paying attention until eventually we heard Kate knock on the door.

I invited her in and we all sat in the living room waiting for her to tell us the update.

"Where's Olivia by the way?" She asked.

"Oh she's at work, she's there a lot nowadays." Roman replied sadly. Kate gave him a sympathetic smile before continuing.

"Well we have managed to track one of the cars in the hotel Skylar was spotted at that looked suspicious and we tracked it to a forest about an hour away from the hotel. We couldn't find where it went after that but we did find a cabin in the middle of the woods that could be where Skylar was taken."

"So you think she could be in this cabin?" I asked, trying to contain my excitement at the idea of them finally having a new lead.

"We don't know, but we are going to look into it and we will be sending a team there to check it out as soon as we have a warrant but I just thought I should let you know what was going on."

"Thank you," I said, smiling gratefully at the detective. "I can't believe we might finally be able to see her again, this nightmare can finally be over."

"Well we shouldn't to get our hopes up in case it is another dead end but this does seem like a good lead so hopefully we can find her soon and end this."

"When would you be able to get a warrant to search the cabin though?" Roman finally chimed in after staying silent the whole conversation.

"We are working on getting the warrant as soon as possible, we should be able to get the warrant and be able to search the cabin tomorrow"

We both nodded unsure of what else to say.

What if it was too late by the time they got there.

"Don't worry though, we are doing everything we can to get this done as quickly as possible and as soon as we hear anything else we will let you know." Kate reassured us. I smiled again at her appreciating the effort she was putting in.

As annoying as it was that we would have to wait so long just for the police to be able to search this cabin, I couldn't help but smile at the idea that Skylar could finally be found and I  could finally tell her how I felt. I showed the detective out shortly after that and sat down with Roman to watch the tv again. We both sat in silence, I think we were still in shock and trying to process what had just happened.

They had a lead, Skylar could finally be brought back home!
