I learned this lesson firsthand
That's why I've got no best friend
Or even real friends.
Wait! Before you think I'm a loner,
I do have friends.
Friends you can't open up to,
Friends you can't show the real you to.
Friends you talk to about everything but nothing in particular.
Tell us what you call a friend.

And you have to keep it all in
And lock it in the deepest part of your heart
Because you have no one to tell it all to
And you're dying slowly on the inside every day
And you're forced to hide your pains beneath the mask of indifference.

You're smile's never really genuine, you have to fake that one too
And your secrets are gradually killing you,
Slowly sucking you into oblivion,
Into a state of absolute lethargy and torpidity,
Into a state where you think you can't go on any longer.
Where you're drowned in torpor,
Submerged in sadness.

And the weight of it all is gradually crushing you,
And you're a few minutes away from breaking down,
From giving up and allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by listlessness and inertia.

How can you ever trust another?
When the only one you've dared to trust
Took it, crushed it,
Trampled on it and shattered it into a million tiny pieces
And you're left all alone to gather the pieces.

You're surrounded by people you call your friend but in reality, you're all alone,
Cause in the lot, there's no one to talk to,
No one to assure you that everything is going to be okay.

No one to lean on cause you know you'll fall,
Fall very hard that you'll get hurt
And you have to helplessly watch yourself gradually losing your sanity
And finally, your soul is lost in a dark abyss and you realize there is no way you're getting it back

Or is there?

This is the life of an average Nigerian teenage girl
