I GLANCED OUT OF the window regretfully, sighing deeply.

"I can turn back around if you've changed your mind."

I smiled softly at Zayaan, shaking my head. "It's okay. If I don't go and talk to her now, it's going to bug me until I do. It's better to get it over and done with."

He frowned. "I just don't like to see what the thought of seeing your parents does to you. Remind me again; why do you even want to in the first place?"

"I told you. My mum was being very weird."

"Weird?"

"Yeah. She was acting as if one of us was dying or something. It was very peculiar." I threw my hands up into the air. "And I'm not dying. So I'm just worried that something might be going on with her."

"You think she's dying?" He asked sceptically, looking through my side of the window at their house.

I winced. "You don't have to say it like that. And no, I don't think she is, but it doesn't hurt to make sure."

"I guess," he mumbled. "Are you sure you don't want me to come in with you?"

"Yes, Zayaan. I'm a big girl; I can face my own parents on my own."

"I know you can."

"But?"

"But I'd still like to come in with you. For moral support." He frowned. "I don't like the idea of you going alone."

"Oh, stop being so dramatic. They're my parents. They're not going to murder me; I'll be perfectly fine."

He gave me a look. "I already told you, I don't like what being around them does to you. I prefer when you're happy and talkative instead of all grumpy and silent."

I felt my heart squeeze just a little more in my chest. "I'll be fine, okay? Go home and I'll be back in less than an hour. I'll still be your happy and chatty wife."

"You better." Zayaan gave me a serious stare, which did something funny to my insides.

I nodded, holding in a smile, and pushed open the car door. I hadn't called beforehand to tell me parents that I was visiting, which I should have done now that I thought about it, but with a wave back at Zayaan, I walked to their front door. It would be a nice surprise anyway. Hopefully.

After climbing the two steps on the porch, I turned back around to see Zayaan, watching me from the driver's seat. I waved again, signalling at him to drive off but he gestured at me to go in first. Rolling my eyes, I plucked my keys from my pocket — because my parents still insisted on me having my own set since they weren't home most of the time — and turned it in the lock, pushing the door open with a slight creak.
