Jade waited patiently outside the hospital wing for her father.

What was wrong with Variety? And why had my Father made me skip the sorting ceremony? Is it because of the same reason he told me to keep my mind occluded. . . And who was trying to enter my mind? Why?

Jade had so many questions but when Snape came out of the hospital wing, she knew which one to ask first.

" Is Variety ok?"

" Yes," he said, looking around.

" Dad, what's going on?" he had called her baby when they were in the dungeons. He never did that unless he was worried for her. Like when she fell off her quidditch broom.

Snape had grabbed her hand and led her to a broom closet, closed the door and cast a mufilo charm. " Jewels, listen to me. In the great hall, someone tried to read my mind. Barely a tap against my occluded walls- but still. I felt their presence." He said quickly.

Jade nodded.

" Anyone who is my enemy would use you to get to me. That's why I told you to block your mind."

She nodded again. " You're scaring me. What's going on?'' She hugged him. " What's wrong with Variety?" her voice was muffled by his frock coat.

Snape held her lightly and kept talking.

" I did something Jade. The sorting hat. . . I told it to not sort you. When Minerva called your name, you would sit on the stool. Try on the hat. And the hat would declare you indecisive. You would not belong to a house."

Jade pulled away from him. " What?" she frowned. " Why?"

The shock, emotional pain, anger, and disappointment. Snape saw it all in her eyes and could hear it in her voice. He felt bad- very bad. Jade trusted him and he plotted things behind her back. Even the smallest amount of hurt in his daughter made his soul ache. I wish only to protect you, little Jewel. Be patient and understand me.

Despite her storming emotions, she wasn't crying- she hardly ever cried. Snape was oddly proud of her for that.

" I told you before. One day the Dark Lord may rise again. His old followers- their children are in Slytherin. When they are older- they will be recruited while still in school. Just as I was. Look at me," his hand touched the side of her face.

" You are a Slytherin. I know you are. And I am proud of you. But if you were put into my house it would put you in danger and endanger the role I may have to play one day."

Jade shook her head, questioning him.

" The dark lord's followers would try to recruit you when you reach the age. You would be expected to act like a pureblood with the old ideals and you wouldn't- because that is not who you are. Being a Slytherin and sticking out that way would get you bullied, hexed, poisoned . . .Being my daughter refusing to be recruited, not acting like a pureblood. . . I am a man who is believed to be loyal to the dark lord. I am the head of the Slytherin house. Expectations are put on you, being in Slytherin would make it worse."

Jade put it together. " they would question your loyalties when I decline recruitment. Question your authority if you can't even control your child. It would endanger us both." she whispered.
