Hey! I'm back to normal updating-ness! This chapter is a half-filler, half-storyline builder. Just hang in there. I think you're going to like the next chapter ;)
It was four days later and I was sitting in the main surveillance room. L and I were on opposite sides of the table. We hadn't really spoken since the kiss. Not alone, anyway. We worked together around the task force, but nothing past that. Suddenly I heard footsteps behind me.
"Everyone, this is Aiber and Wedy," L introduced the two people who were standing behind us. I turned and saw a tall man with slicked back hair and a blonde woman in sunglasses. "They are going to be assisting us in the Kira Case. Aiber is a con-man and Wedy is a thief by trade. She has proved her skills by getting in here unnoticed."
"You expect us to work with criminals?" the ex-chief asked.
"For the good of this case, yes."
I looked at the two for a second, then nodded.
"Alright," I said. "Nice to meet you." I extended my hand and Aiber shook it, followed by Wedy. Soichiro eyed the carefully, but accepted.
"Our next step is to set up security cameras in Yotsuba. Now I don't want anyone to go near the Yotsuba building or make any drastic moves until-" L was cut off by the ringing of his cell phone.
"Hello?" he spoke into the receiver. There was a pause. "Really?" Another pause. "One moment."
L hung up and signed.
"Scratch what I said before," he said. He dialed Matsuda's number.
"Hello?" Matsuda spoke through the speaker.
"Hey! Matsuda It's me, your old buddy Hideki!" L spoke in a fake voice.
"Oh, yeah!" Matsuda exclaimed, followed by nervous laughter.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go out drinking tonight?" L asked.
"Sorry, I can't."
"Oh, come on! Don't tell me that your wallet is in trouble again," L spoke, adding emfasis onto 'in trouble'. I smiled.
"Yeah, Matsuda replied. "In trouble."
L pulled away from the phone.
"Matsuda is in trouble."
"Well maybe another time then, buddy," he spoke into the phone. "See ya!"
L hung up and sighed. "Matsuda was caught listening in on the Yotsuba group conversation. They are holding him."
"Matsuda, you idiot," I mumbled, shaking my head.
"We need to get him out of there," L said. "There is a large chance that they will kill him if they think he heard anything."
"But even if we get him out of there, who's to say that Kira won't kill him?" Light asked.
"True," L nodded. "Well, we can always have him fake his death."
"How would we do that?" Mogi asked.
"We're going to need a mattress and an ambulance," L explained. I caught onto what he was thinking and smiled.
It was chilly out at night. I stood on the terrace a few feet away from the mattress that was set up. My hands found the sides of my jacket and pulled it tighter around me. I could hear something happening on the floors higher. Then shouting, and screaming. I jumped back slightly just as matsuda fell onto the mattress.
Right now Aiber was laying on the sidewalk below. L and Light were in an ambulance that would arrive to pick him up any second now, and the Yotsuba group would know Matsuda to be dead. Perfect.
I lent Matsuda my hand and helped pull him onto his feet. He brushed his clothes off.
"I think that went well," he said with a slight grin. I couldn't help but smile at him. Though sometimes he did dumb things, how couldn't you love the guy? I mean come on! I shook my head and gave him a small hug.
"Matsuda, you idiot."
"Now that we have surveillance cameras and microphones set up in the Yotsuba meeting group, we can watch everything they do," L said. We were back in the headquarters, standing in front of the big monitors.
Things were relaxing a bit between L and I. We had started talking and working together like normal. It was almost as if the kiss had been forgotten, and I wasn't sure whether I was happy or sad about that.
Light had started becoming more... I don't know. He was acting strangely. He was still acting all lovey towards me like before, but he also seemed a little more guarded and reserved. He had been like that ever since Kei's death.
I watched the monitors, sitting in a chair in between L and Light.
"I don't want to do this anymore," one of the men said suddenly. I believe his name was Hatori, or something along those lines.
"What are you talking about?"
"I don't want to be involved in these killings anymore! What if someone were to find out?" he paused as the men looked at him.
"Are you implying that someone might leak information?"
"I- um... no! N-never mind. Forget I said anything," Hatori retreated. Oh no. This wasn't going to end well. I could already tell that.
Hatori was a dead man.
As I said before, you guys will probably like the next chapter :) Hang in there!
