Yay! It's almost my birthday! For those of you who said "Wammy boys" yes. Yes there are.
The car pulled up to a big building that looked a little bit like a church. I heard bells ringing and I closed my eyes, a wave of peaceful nostalgia engulfing me.
"Is this the place?" I asked.
"For now," L nodded. "I wonder if they still have my old room...."
"Should we go in?" I questioned, looking over the building. I shivered as the cold morning air pierced my jacket.
"I'm just waiting for someone," he said. "He should be out in three, two, one."
As he finished speaking, the front doors opened. A older man in a worn suit stepped out into the front yard and squinted.
"L?" he asked. "L, is that you?"
"Hello, Roger," L nodded to the man.
"Dear lord! L, I can't believe it!" the man came racing down the front sidewalk to us. He stopped in front of us and looked at me. "Who might this lovely lady be?"
"This is Masayo Fujimoto," L replied. "She's my girlfriend."
"A girlfriend!" Roger looked ready to explode out of surprise. "I never thought you would be one to fall in love. Well congratulations to you both. How can I help you?"
"We're in a bit of a bind," L said. "I can give you the details later but right now we need a place to stay for a few days."
"Oh, of course," Roger nodded. "You are always welcome here. You're old room is just as you left it, and I should be able to make arrangements for both of you."
"Good," L nodded. "Would you give us a moment to get our bags?"
"Sure," the elder nodded. "I can send someone out to help you."
"No, that won't be necessary," L shook his head. "We can get them ourselves." We turned around and opened the back of the car. L took four bags and I took three. Roger took the two remaining and lead us into the building.
Inside, the walls were a nice welcoming tan color. The floors were polished wood. I could hear footsteps and children's laughter through the walls. Two boys came wandering out into the hallway from one of the many doors that lined it's walls.
"I'm warning you, Mello," one of them spoke. He couldn't have been more than fifteen or sixteen. He had reddish brown hair and wore a striped shirt and orange goggles over his eyes. "If you get chocolate on my game controller again I will-"
"What?" the other spoke. This one had chin length blonde hair and blue eyes, around the same age. He wore a black shirt and pants. "It's not like you can hurt me. You know I would beat you."
"Yeah, I know," the redhead smiled at him. "That's the only reason you keep me around."
"Mello, Matt," Roger spoke. The two boys paused and turned to see the three of us. "Could you please go to the kitchen and have one of the chefs send up a tray of sweets to room 2A?"
"Sure," the redhead, Matt, replied.
"Whatever," the blonde scowled. The two hurried off through another door, but not before the blonde looked back at L and I with a confused and slightly displeased look.
"You still have my old room?" L asked in surprise.
"Of course!" Roger nodded. "Just as you left it. Come on, I'll show you to it."
Roger lead us down a series of hallways to room 2A. He held open the door for L and I to walk in. Inside, the room's walls were a lighter, offset white. The floor was wood with a rug in the center. There were two beds, one on either side of the room. Two beds, two desks, two nightstands, and one door, which I assumed was to a bathroom.
"I'll leave you two to get settled in," Roger smiled. He closed the door. The click of the stopper sliding into place sounded.
"Um, L?" I asked, sitting on the bed. He turned to me, sitting in his crouched position on a desk chair.
"Yes?"
"Where are we exactly?" He smiled slightly at this question.
"This is Wammy's House," L explained. "It's an orphanage in Winchester, England. Quillsh Wammy, or Watari as we know him, founded several orphanages after world war two, this being one of them.
"I was raised here. Watari found me when I was very young and took me here. It was originally a orphanage for extremely gifted children, but is now training my successors," L looked around the room for a minute, looking lost in memories.
"Wow," I said. "Who are your successors?"
"Well for the time being I'm in between two boys," L said. "You've already met one of them, Mello. He was the boy with blonde hair. The second is a younger boy named Near. You and I will be meeting with them shortly to discuss something."
Suddenly, something clicked.
"You're going to have them take over the case in your place."
"In a way," he nodded. "Before Mello and Near, there were two other successors. The first was A, but he committed suicide. The second in line was B, or Beyond Birthday as we refer to him now. He left, then went on to become a serial killer in the Los Angeles BB Murder Case. I took on that case a year or so before I met you."
"Hm," I hummed. "So they're training detectives?"
"Pretty much," L shrugged. "There is another boy as well, whom you have also met. The boy with reddish brown hair, Matt. He's the third smartest student behind Mello and Near, but he's not in line to be my successor yet."
"Okay, I think I understand now," I nodded.
"Good," L smiled. "In two days time, we'll be meeting with Near and Mello privatly to go over plans with the Kira case."
"We'll?" I asked.
"Yes, we'll."
