Vine was almost saved from Gier when he was twelve. A stranger was walking by and noticed the building and how abandoned it seemed. Then they saw Vine in the window and wanted to talk to him, so he broke in. He quickly discovered what was happening, but before he could call law enforcement, Gier found and killed him.
