The heat was excruciating. Excruti-fucking-ating. My head spinning circles as I was just told she was coming to the party. My head was spinning in circles as I remembered that strange dream I had had months ago, but it felt too real. I hadn't seen that girl—Yoo Jeongyeon—since the wedding back in June. It's May now, and so many things have changed. I could finally say I had left that small one-night crush behind and I had learned how to find my own happiness. I remember her every morning and every night, but why? What's so special about her?
It was Naon's birthday party. Sure, it seemed logical that the child's aunt would show up for her birthday, but, somehow, I never thought of it. I never thought I would see her again. A pact I made with myself that it was just going to be casual, but there was a feeling in me that it would be the opposite. I mean, she had a girlfriend, for as much as I prayed that she didn't. Even my dreams tried to convince me it was nothing. I know you might be confused, but Jun-myeon's party was all just a huge dream. Well, the party did happen, but it was just plain boring and there was nothing memorable about it.
My grandmother was next to me, looking at her phone, as always. My mother was talking to Hye-jin's sister Eun-ha, and I was just plain nervous. Once Hye-jin said that Jeongyeon was coming to the party, my brow started sweating and my pulse accelerated. Was this really happening? What if this was another dream of mine? My mind mixed up emotions and sometimes thought that my dream had actually happened. Even so, Jeongyeon had a girlfriend, apparently, and the feeling was mutual. 'Twas a good idea to take a deep breath and make an attempt to stay calm throughout the whole party. Nothing sounded better but to ignore her completely. I didn't want to, but for my own sanity, I had to. Sipping on a Coke, I focused on the music playing in the background (the speaker was connected to my phone). After a short amount of time, I found peace within myself and focused on something else.
Eun-ha started running towards the pavement, greeting a Fiat that had just parked. The party was in Na-ra's and Hye-jin's garage, by the way. Everyone was looking in her direction, but I wasn't. I was too busy sipping my coke and listening to the music that was playing. I was sitting at a table and spacing out to the horizon; hoping that the person that arrived wasn't the one I thought of.
"Aunt Jeonggiiii~" Naon excitedly shrilled.
Fuck. Fuck me and my luck.
Naon ran up to the garage and stood right beside me, waiting for her aunt. I clenched my hands into fists as I did my best not to stop focusing on the music. To make things worse, "Curiosity" by Amber Liu started playing. I took a deep breath and decided to look at Naon, but it was already late. Instead of raising my head to look at the child with the pigtails, I saw Jeongyeon and melted into her eyes. All of a sudden, what I was trying to avoid was what I ended up facing—and I wasn't complaining. I quickly looked away, hoping she was as shy as I was.
