Hanji's POV
Right before I was about to sleep, I hear someone climbing the tower. They fiddled with the lock before I heard banging. Not to wake me up, but to break the door down. Levi wasn't here... and I feared the worse for me. It didn't take long until the wood around the metal handle broke and the door swung open.
"Assistant Chief Hanji Zoe!" I hear it was the captain of the ship- a Marleyan man named Christopher. "You're alive- hurry it up, we're escaping."
"E-Escaping?" I tilted my head, completely worried. If I leave... what happens? "Captain Christopher, what is going on? How are we escaping?"
"These devils have killed the Eldians we had and they were exploiting you. Don't buy their lies. We'll leave- tonight. As quickly as possible. We must return home."
Someone runs up behind him, holding a small bag. "Captain, we found it."
"Good. Start dropping them at the base of this tower. Go to the window and drop them."
"Yes, Captain."
The man went to the window, dropping little bombs at the window. That's when I realized their plan. They weren't just escaping... they were planning to kill everyone in this place. Instantly thought back to Levi, someone that I feel my heartstrings were being pulled towards. I hear them dropping them at the tower, and I remained silent and frozen in place. What must I do?
"Let's go," The Captain guides me out of the tower, and I didn't know what to do.
Once we were out of the tower, I said something that made me question my loyalty. "Let me go for a little bit. I want to kill someone. The one person that kept me there."
The Marleyan Captain nodded with a sneer on his face. "We'll meet you outside. You have 10 minutes before those bombs go off. Make it quick. Make it bloody."
I quickly run around, looking at the endless halls, not knowing where Levi was. I ran up countless stairs, looking through random rooms. I couldn't find him. My legs were burning after finally coming into a room that felt different. I thought it was Levi's as there wasn't a speck of dust in the room. When he stayed the night in my room, he always cleaned everything- and I mean everything.
One of the wooden doors inside of the room opened and he walks out with a towel around his neck, revealing himself with only pants on. His gray eyes catch onto me, and with a speed I've never seen before, he pins me to the stone wall, taking the breath out of my lungs. His arm was pinned against my throat, but not enough force to choke me.
I hear him growl as his voice grew low. "How the hell did you get out, huh?"
He eases his arm over my throat to let me speak for myself. I have to prove my loyalty... but to which side? Marley or to him?
"Answer me!" He takes me off the wall before throwing me back onto it. "Hanji, I swear, if you don't answer, I will make you answer- with or without some body parts."
"T-The Marleyans..." I shed a few tears, choosing a path that may or may not hurt my people. "They broke out... they're going to blow this place up. I came down to warn you."
"And you did this out of the goodness of your heart, huh?"
"I don't want trouble. I want to protect my family. I could've left... ran away with the Marleyans and returned home... I didn't. I could've, but I didn't. I could've gone back home to my family... but I chose not to."
"Why?"
"Because... I want to help my people. Eldians. I want to help Eldians out from the city that we're always confined to. If you can help free them... I do whatever it'll take. Just save my people... and I swear, I'll be your spy. I'll be your chess piece. I don't want any more lives to be taken. Please..."
Levi lets me down, still scowling. "Get back to your room-."
"They dropped bombs from my window. I have less than 5 minutes before that gets blown up. I will not go back there."
"Then you stay here." He grabs a shirt and quickly puts it on before glaring at me. "Stay here." He runs out of the room, and I did exactly what he said. I will not risk anything else. I've chosen to betray Marley. I chose to side with the Island Devils. But now that I'm thinking of it, was there another reason to why I chose to betray Marley?
* * *
Someone entered the room, bearing the pair of wings symbol on his chest. His face seems... sad. But he looked somewhat healthy. "You're still here." He says, leaning against the wall. "So you must be Hanji Zoe..."
"I think that's creepy you know my name when I don't know yours."
"Moblit Berner."
"How did you find me?"
"The captain sent me here to ensure you were here. Have you been here this entire time? I'm... impressed." He chuckles to himself, "And I hear you're loyal to your people, huh? Like a true leader..."
"And what's wrong with that?"
"If I'm honest, we need people like you." His tone changed when he spoke, "We're being led by someone inexperienced... and I wish we had someone else to help teach him. He doesn't know how to interact with the world just yet. He's still so young."
"The child commander?" I raised an eyebrow as he nods his head.
"Yeah, him. I don't blame him or anything... I just feel... bad. Levi's trying his best, but we're not perfect. None of us are leaders."
"I would think he's a leader. Considering all the threats he has made over the weeks I've known him-."
"That's just him. He's straight to the point." Moblit looked out of the room with another heavy sigh. "I can't lead anything. I'm a follower. I'm not intelligent enough to think ahead of what could happen. I'm not strong enough to do anything else other than follow orders. I sound stupid, huh? Stupid... a sad man."
We stayed silent until the door opened wide and Levi came into the room with a few cuts on his face. "So?"
"When I walked in, she was sitting there. I don't believe she left-."
The captain raised his hand to silence him and he looks down at me. "I'll ask again: why did you betray the people that broke you out?"
"If I return home..." I say, speaking my mind, "they will invade this place. They will continue to use my people as weapons for their agendas. If I return home, they'll crown me as a hero... and I'll be responsible for your people's blood. I know what you guys have done to me has been nothing but being cautious about everything. We would've done the same thing. I never thought the people on this island would know what being kind meant. And I thought that if you could liberate my people from Marley... then I'll do whatever it takes. I don't want innocent blood spilled."
Levi stared at me, studying my words. My mind's been jumping around, I admit that. But this is my truth. This is what I believe now. Forget everything else.
Levi looked away from me, "Moblit, check for anyone trapped near the tower."
"Understood." He quickly runs out of the room, leaving me with Levi.
"We captured them, Hanji. They blamed you for everything."
"But I did nothing-."
"I know because they claimed that they had a spy running between you and them. I'm the only one that goes to your tower. They can't make it up to your tower as the key I have locked both the bottom of the staircase and to your room. I know you're telling the truth that you had nothing to do with this. And besides, you had a chance to leave, and you didn't. For now, you'll stay in this room until we figure out what to do with you."
"In a good way or in a bad way?"
"Depends. The MPs will get involved."
