I woke up in my bed in the attic of the Mystery Shack, covers tossed everywhere, sweating even though I was freezing. I was also hyperventilating.
Mabel was standing by my bed. "Dipper! You were screaming in your sleep! You weren't having those nightmares again, were you?"
I sat up, turned to her, and rolled my eyes. "No Mabel, I slept just fine."
"Oh, really? Because you were screaming in your sleep." Mabel said, confused.
"Mabel. It's called sarcasm." I glared at her.
She sat down next to me. "Okay, okay. What was it this time?"
I sighed. I'd been having these stupid nightmares since the day we'd arrived in Gravity Falls. Nightmares that kept making me feel like I made the wrong choice three years ago. That made me feel like I shouldn't have saved Mabel. And I hated it.
"It...I chose to hold your deal and not to reverse it and...then life was..." My lip trembled. "Better without you. And...it was terrible."
"Hush. It's just a nightmare. Let's have some breakfast. You'll feel better." Mabel smiled encouragingly.
"But Mabel...these stupid nightmares started the day we got to Gravity Falls. It's gotta have something to do with the town and-" I started, but Mabel cut me off.
"And we'll look into it after breakfast. Stan made stancakes!" She grinned.
Mabel giddily skipped down the stairs, and I slowly followed. We ended up getting into the kitchen at the sane time, though. Somehow.
"Morning!" Stan said as he slid a plate of stancakes onto the table. "How're my two favorite grand-nieces?"
"We're your only grand-nieces!" Mabel giggled.
"Yeah, yeah, don't remind me." I rolled my eyes as I slid into a seat next to Mabel.
"Whatever." Stan shrugged. "Stancakes! Plus, school starts tomorrow. You've got one last day of summer vacation."
"I don't want to go to school." I muttered.
"Hello? Is Dipper in there? School?" Mabel tapped the top of my head.
"Yeah, I know. It's just..." I sighed. "Everyone here knows me, or at least, they used to...you know what I mean. I mean, what if...what if someone recognizes me and-"
"Shush." Mabel cut me off. "Stop worrying. Tsk, tsk. If you work yourself up over everything nothing's gonna go well."
I sighed. She was right. But I didn't want to give her that, so I didn't say anything. I just struggled to digest my stancakes.
When did life get so complicated?
Oh, right.
Three years ago.
