I imagine he felt guilty, more than he did when he first met the Player, and we know he was carrying overwhelming guilt from trying to infect the Player before, and after Zizzy got infected, he felt like he was the one to blame.
I feel like The Insolence would take this opportunity to fuel that energy into anger and hate towards Willow, while still blaming himself. Encouraging and shaping these feelings would make it easier for The Insolence to recruit Pony.
