A New Rose

Scene 10

Rose in her room can't sleep and she keeps turning around in her bed.
It's around 2 a.m. when Rose begins to cry because she is frustrated that she can't sleep.
Summer passes in front of her door and hears her crying.
Summer – " baby what's wrong? "
Rose turns around for facing her
Rose – " nothing is just, um, I suffer from insomnia so I find it really hard to fall asleep. Only some nights I manage to fall asleep immediately. When I don't, I start to feel frustrated because I can't sleep so I begin to cry. I don't know why. "
Summer walks over to the bed and lays down with Rose.
Summer – " it's ok, you want me to stay here until you fall asleep? "
Rose nods with her head
Rose – " do you know any Italian? "
Summer shakes her head as a no
Summer – " do you ? "
Rose – " yeah. I was born in Italy, but my mom moved here when my dad left us. At first she kept speaking in Italian to me so I would understand, then she started in English because she was drunk so she actually didn't know in witch language she was speaking. "
Summer – " you never told me that "
Rose – " I suffer from insomnia because back in the old house I was afraid that my mom could hurt me in my sleep, but there was this song that I sang every night for calm myself "
Summer – " and it's an Italian song?"
Rose – " yes "
Summer – " sing it "
Rose looks at Summer, then back at the ceiling and she begins to sing ' lettera a mio padre '
Summer – " that was beautiful, I wish I could understand the words "
Rose – " it is a letter that a son writes to his father saying that he was never there and the only thing that his son has is his last name "
Summer looks at Rose who is still looking at the ceiling
Summer – " try to get some sleep now honey "
Rose hugs Summer's arm and after a while she falls asleep, Summer falls asleep too.
After a while Rose has a nightmare and she wakes up sweating.
Summer wakes up too.
Summer – " hey, baby, you're ok, it was just a nightmare "
Rose looks at Summer with tears in her eyes.
Summer hugs Rose
Rose – " it was awful, I was back in my old house and Lucy was hitting me "
Summer – " it was just a dream, you're safe here and Lucy is back in the detox center "
Rose and Summer lay back down, Rose has her head on Summer's chest and her arms around her waist.
After a few minutes Rose is half asleep.
Rose – " thank you mom "
Summer looks at Rose, but she was already sleeping
Summer put her head back down on the pillow, tears coming from her eyes.
Summer – " you're welcome baby " * whispering *
It was the first time that Rose called Summer ' mom ' .

The next morning Rose wakes up and Summer is still asleep.
Rose goes to the kitchen and begin to prepare breakfast.
While she's cooking she sings ' La Vie en Rose '
Summer gets up and hears Rose singing from the kitchen, she leans on the door so she can see Rose, but Rose can't see her.
Dahlia walks out of her room and runs up to Rose, Rose picks her up.
Rose – " good morning little devil "
Dahlia giggles
Dahlia – " morning "
Dahlia stares intensely at the pancakes
Rose – " are you  hungry ? "
Dahlia nods with her head
Rose – " go to wake up mommy and daddy and we will eat "
Rose puts Dahlia down and she runs to wake Summer and Cole up.
They all come back.
Carl – " wow, they look really good "
Summer walks up to Rose
Summer – " you didn't have to "
Rose – " I wanted to "
Summer gives a kiss to Rose on her forehead
Rose – " let's eat! "
They are all eating
Rose – " so Dahlia do you want to go to the Luna park today ? "
Dahlia – " YESSS! "
Summer – " absolutely not "
Rose – " what, why ?  "
Summer – " because I don't trust you two together "
Rose – " hey, I'm responsible "
Summer looks at Rose
Rose and Dahlia – " pleaseeee" * giving puppy eyes *
Summer – " ugh, fine. But no horror house, she's too young "
Rose – " ok. Go get ready devil, we're going to the Lunaaaaaa Parkkkkk! "
Summer and Cole laugh, Rose and Dahlia get up for getting ready.
Summer – " come back in one piece, both of you " * laughing *
Cole – " have fun "
Rose – " thanks dad, bye mom "
Dahlia – " bye "
Rose and Dahlia exit.
Cole looks at Summer
Summer – " you heard right, she called you dad " * smiling *
Cole – " she called me dad. And she called you mom too "
Summer – " sounds good right? "
Cole – " so good "
