She wakes with a start, as if her body has been jolted awake with the fact that she has been sleeping for far too long to be normal. She reaches over for him, hoping that he might be awake with her for some emotional support, only for her to touch cold sheets.
And so, she pushes back the covers and ventures out of the bedroom. There is a light in the kitchen as seen from the far end of the hall where she stands. By then, she already has an inkling that they may be together. Still, she sneaks a peek at the nursery and sees the crib empty, confirming her suspicions.
When she arrives at the kitchen, her heart instantly melts at the sight that greets her. He seems to be in the middle of preparing a snack, something he often does even before they got married, while carrying their little baby inside his jacket.
She couldn't understand how he was able to swaddle him that way, but it seemed to be working. And the way their son watches the food preparation with fascination stirs something inside of her.
"What are you two doing up?"
He looks up at her, smiling sheepishly at the way she's looking at him with her arms folded, and says, "I was hungry, and he was awake."
