Chapter 5 - Who's 'We'

With Rafe being MIA, Lila hadn't seen him in three days, that left Lila to enjoy some time with her best friend Sarah.

Lila had made plans to meet Sarah at her house, no explaination or anything, just a simple, 'Come over in 30.'

As Lila threw on her shoes and headed over to Sarah's she couldn't help but let her mind ponder what Sarah had needed. It could just be something small and she's overthinking it or maybe Sarah just didn't have time to explain anything.

Lila opened the front door and headed upstairs to Sarah's room. Before Lila even had a chance to knock Sarah's door swings open and Lila's being yanked inside.

"What the hell?" She exclaims spinning around to face her best friend who has a single finger on her lips trying to shush her.

Lila's eyes widen as she quickly closes her mouth. "I need you to chill out, okay?" Lila nods silently at her. "Listen, we need your help."

"We?" Lila asks, her question being ignored as Sarah opens her door motioning for Lila to follow her downstairs. Sarah walks outside to the black Volvo sitting in the driveway.

"Hop in." She smirks opening her door and getting into the car. Lila hesitantly walks over and gets in as well, buckling up.

Moments after Sarah pulls out of the driveway Lila's mind begins pondering where they're headed.

"Um, so where are you, taking me?" Lila asks in a higher pitched voice. "No questions, we'll explain when we get there." Sarah says, pressing it on the gas.

"Sarah this isn't even legal, you still need to drive with an adult for 2 more months." Lila states. Sarah gives Lila the side eye and looks back at the road.

As Lila examines the view outside the window, she notices the house getting smaller and smaller. "Are you taking me to the cut?" Lila asks sitting up a little straighter in her seat, her eyebrows furrowing together.

"I said no questions." Sarah says.

A few minutes later, Sarah pulls into a makeshift-type driveway at a small looking house, more like a shack in Lila's eyes. "Let's go." Sarah says hopping out of the car signaling for Lila to follow her around back.

Seeing a surfer looking boy, Lila's eyes widen. "Here's your girl." Sarah says smiling to the surfer boy sitting around the fire on a log. "Delilah Limbrey, thanks for coming." John B says standing up and shaking hands with her.

"Yeah sure, but why am I here exactly?" Lila asks, turning to look at Sarah. "Is this the 'we' you were talking about?"

"We need your help." John B starts, a serious look washing over his face. Lila glances at John B, and then Sarah, before letting her gaze fall on John B again. She gives him a nod and walks over to sit down on one of the three logs to get an explaination. She eyes Sarah as she takes a seat beside John B.

"You're connected, to the Royal Merchant." John B says. "Yeah but what does that have to do with you?" Lila asks. "My dad was looking for the gold, that he believed went down with the ship. Turns out it's on land, to find it, we need your help." John B says. "The gold is technically under your family name, meaning, whoever finds it, needs you to turn it over to them."

Lila sits there, astonished as she takes in all the bits and pieces of the information John B just gave her.

"So you want me to 'sign the papers' or whatever you need to seal the deal on the gold?" Lila asks.

"Basically. Now, I'm not totally sure on how the deal thing works but you'll get your share on the gold, as well as the rest of our group." John B says.

"You told Kiara and the others about us right?" Sarah asks. John B sighs and runs a hand through his messy hair. "John B-"

"Look I didn't want to start anything just yet, can we wait until Midsummers, please?"

Sarah waits a moment before responding, "Fine." John B gives her a smile as a 'thank you'.

"Alright so the plan is, I'm going to talk to the pogues the night of Midsummers, after the fact, Sarah is going to meet up with me at The Hawks Nest to give me the map of Tannyhill."

Lila claps her hands together, "Alright sounds like a plan."

About an hour later Sarah and Lila find themselves back in her car on the way to Sarah's. The whole ride is silent as Lila debates on what she's going to question Sarah about John B. They're best friends, she knows somethings up.

Getting out of the car and following Sarah inside the two head to her room. After closing the door and getting comfortable on Sarah's bed Lila decides to take action.

"So what's going on with you and, Mr. Surfer Dude?" Lila asks, a smug look on her face.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Sarah says walking over to take a seat on the bed in front of Lila.

"Well the looks the two of you were giving each other back at his place says otherwise. Bonus points for sitting beside him as well." Lila says winking at her. "Anything you care to explain?"

Sarah sighs, finally giving in. "Okay fine, we kissed, once."

"I haven't heard much from you lately, were you, by any chance, with him?"

"Maybe I was, maybe I wasn't." Sarah smiling, she looks down at her hands.

"You like him!" Lila exclaims. She sees the blush come over Sarah's cheeks as she smiles even more. "I can see it!"

"Okay fine, maybe, I do have some, small, feelings for him." She admits. "But where have you been recently hmm? You're just as guilty." The question hits Lila in a wave of shock. She'd never expected to be asked this.

"Um, well," Lila starts, but is quickly cut off by a smug reply from Sarah.

"See, now who's the one hiding something. Who's the guy?" She asks.

Lila sucks in a breath, "I can't, say."

Sarah is quick to furrow her eyebrows. "You can't say?" Lila nods slowly, giving her an apologetic look.

"Lila, I'm your best friend."

"I know, I know, right now just isn't the right time. We're not even really friends, it's just, us. I don't know how to explain it and I can't really process it right now but I swear, I'll tell you soon enough." Lila says.

"Okay fine." Sarah says, sighing. She begins laughing, her laughter contagious. The two girls' laughter filling the room. As Rafe walks out of his room he smiles to himself as he hears his little sister and Lila laughing together. It puts him at peace, she puts him at peace.

He can't stand being away from her any longer. He had to see her. Being away from her was eating him up from the inside out. He wanted to spend every last minute with her.
