B word

"Are you and Will boyfriends?"

That was the question Hazel decided to ask Nico one day. And that was the question Nico did not know how to answer.

"I... don't know. I know he likes me cause, well, he's told me before. So does that make us boyfriends? Or are we just going out because we've been on dates before?"

Hazel waved her hands in defeat. "Don't ask me. Ask your maybe-boyfriend."

Surprise, surprise, Nico never got around to asking him.

It'd be too awkward Nico decided. Will is better at conversations like these. I'll just wait for him to start it.

Who knew it would take Will's dad falling in a dumpster for Will to call Nico his boyfriend?

"So it's true. You're completely mortal." Nico said. "There's an aura of death around you - a thick possibility of death."

Meg had said something about the weather, but Nico wasn't really listening, because he was a little shock by what happened next.

"I apologize for my boyfriend." Will said, facing his mortal father.

There it was.

The B word.

Nico composed himself quickly enough to retort with some snarky remark, but Will's words stayed on his mind the entire day. Not even Apollo's - or Lester's? - deathly aura could distract him (And it was a strong aura).

Nico waited until the two of them were alone to ask about it. It happened later that night. Everyone else went to bed, but Will insisted on staying up to restock the infirmary. Nico had, eagerly, offered to help. 

"Okay, what's wrong?"

Nico blinked. "Nothing's wrong. Why would you think something is wrong?"

Will smiled, looking at Nico from the corner of his eye. "You only like stocking the infirmary with me because it gives us alone time. So you clearly want to talk. So, what's up?"

Nico scowled at how well Will seemed to now him. It was true. The two boys have had some of their more memorable conversations after-hours in the infirmary, where no one could hear them.

"I just wanted to know if- are we boyfriends?" Nico blurted out. Will looked unfazed as he refilled a jar of tongue depressors. "Well, I always thought we were, but if you don't want that then I'll stop using the term until you're ready."

Nico stared at Will, his mouth involuntarily open. All this worrying and thinking Nico's been doing and Will isn't the slightest bit of nervous. "I- I like being called your boyfriend." Nico stated.

Will momentary looked away from the tongue depressors and instead at Nico. "Then I'll start calling you that, boyfriend." he peaked the top of Nico's head. "Now, let's go to bed. I'm exhausted."

So the Nico left the infirmary, hand-in-hand with Will.

His boyfriend.
