Soulmates

Will kept his eyes trained on his wrist, desperately pleading that the numbers tattooed on his wrist continue counting down. When you're born, you get a set of number on your wrist. Those numbers were the seconds until you met your soulmate. The seconds are supposedly supposed to start counting down immediately, and they did for Will. He was in his collage library one day, watching the seconds tick by. It felt like a soft stinging on his skin. Ten... nine...eight... seven...

By five, Will had stood up to stand by the doors of the library and meet his soulmate.

Four... three... two... 

That's it.

Will knew from his friends that the clock was meant to hit zero. So why did his stay at one?

Nobody came through the library door, and as Will retreated back to his seat, he could feel the number on his wrist reversing. One... two... three... four...

He sat back down on ten. And his wrist stayed on ten every since.

Will glance up from his wrist at the sound of the doorbell. He worked part-time at his collage's nearby coffee shop. It didn't pay much, but Will loved it there. He did struggle to pay his rent sometimes, though. That's why he applied for a roommate.

Speaking of roommate, Jason Grace walked into the cafe. He used to be Will's roommate until he moved out to be with his soulmate. He remembers the day Jason rushed home to show Will the zero on his wrist. He'd never been so jealous in his life.

"Hey man! How's it going with the uh..."

"Soulmate thing? No luck. I'm still on ten."

Jason frowned. "Sorry. But, hey! Doesn't your roommate move in today? That'll take your mind off it."

Will tried to smiling. "Yeah, I guess so. In fact, he's supposed to get here in like, fifteen minutes."

"How about I walk you over there? Who knows, maybe he'll be your soulmate?"

Will smiled at the thought as he took his apron off. "I can hope, right?"

Jason and Will walked over to the dorm room. Even though Will was excited, he wasn't about to get his hopes up. The day his timer froze, he did a lot of research as to why. Some say that means your soulmate died. Others say it means your soulmate chose someone else. Then there were some that say it means you just don't have a soulmate at all. Will didn't want to believe any of it, but he can't avoid the facts.

He waves goodbye to Jason as he entered his apartment. He only had about ten minutes until his roommate was suppose to arrive. He figured he'd tidy up a bit. Will felt his wrist sting, but he chose to ignore it. After all, this wouldn't be the first time his timer wrong him.

Still he could hear the countdown in his head. Ten... nine... eight...

Will put the last dish away on four. He was trying extremely hard to avoid looking down at his wrist. Will knew he'd just be disappointed again, yet the urge to raise his arm was unbearable.

Three... two... one...

Will couldn't help himself. He looked.

Zero.

Zero?

The front door opened and Will saw a boy standing there looking just as surprised as he was. The first thing Will noticed was that this boy was insanely attractive. Something about his messy black hair and dark eyes made Will want to kiss him, which made no sense. He didn't even know this boy. This... very pretty boy.

"Um. Hi. I'm Nico. I'm also your soulmate. But you knew that already. Sorry."

The boy - Nico - fidgeted with the hem of his shirt. Will was stunned. "You- you're my soulmate?"

Nico looked down at his wrist, which showed the number zero. "Yeah. Sorry if you're disappointed."

Will almost laughed. "Disappointed? Nico, I couldn't ask for a better soulmate." he paused. "Would you like to go out later? Maybe after I help you unpack?"

Nico smiled and nodded. "I'd like that."

He took Will's hand as he lead him inside.
