January 25,
A year later

The darkness spelt impending doom. A gloom so palatable it fell like a thick blanket upon the streets.

There were noises and creaks at the corner of the street behind an unused warehouse, perhaps rats?
It was more of a shuffling sound. Feet. Men.

“Is everything going according to plan?” A voice tore through the darkness. Not just the regular or run-of-the-mill kind of voice, this was one which commanded authority, sucking whatever remaining life out of the already gloomy darkness.

“Y-yes sir, the trail has gone cold. The police have other pending issues to deal with now than to focus on one dead cop.” A timid, less calculating voice replied.

“And all evidence?”

“Annihilated, Sir. The police have hit a dead end for almost a year now, Sir.”

“Fair. You're no longer useful to me.”

“Wha–?!”

There were suddenly more shuffling noises as more men came out of the dark then a thud that sounded like a body hitting the ground.

Then came silence. Deafening silence.
