Like her father, Kade put her head down and she got to work.
The Kazansky house descended into grief, but it was a strange sort of pain — visceral but unsurprising. Years ago, they had anticipated this, when Tom was diagnosed the first time. Though he healed and went into remission, he was never quite the same, and somehow they always knew it would come back. They were ready for it the second time. It didn't make it hurt any less.
Kade couldn't bring herself to talk about the details of her dad's death. The moments in which she felt her father draw his last breaths were intensely painful and private, and she knew she would never speak of them to anyone. Being at his side as he left this world was a gift that he had given her, and only her, and she would never forget how it felt. She got the strangest feeling that she was indescribably lucky. He was there when she came into the world and she was there when he went out of it.
Life had come full circle.
The truth was, Tom clung onto life for so long, even though it was hurting him more and more everyday. She understood now that he was just waiting for her. He put himself through all that pain just so he could be sure things between them were healed before he left forever. He always put them first, suffered through pain for the sake of those he loved.
