Kade didn't know where to go.

Iceman was dead. Where else could she run to?

The rain was punishing, each drop like a knife cutting through her. The sky was dark and angry, and with every flash of lightning, she was struck by flashbacks of the last time she was in a storm this fierce. Judge. Elvis. Berlin. Hurricane. Apollo. She couldn't breathe through it. She ran up the sloping lawn of his house, mud splattering up onto her legs, making her slip onto her hands and knees.

She could feel her phone buzzing — a rush of messages coming in from Sarah, Pete, Bradley, everyone. She was out too late. She was gone too long. She just lost her father. Maybe they thought she had relapsed. She didn't care. She ignored them all.

Kade was nearly at the house. She could hear music inside, the warm glow of life radiating from under the front door. It drew her to it like a lighthouse in the sea. She slipped on the first step and stumbled onto the porch where she pounded the side of her fist against his front screen, chest heaving, already shaking.

Bradley opened the door.

Kade stood there, soaking wet, staring up, "You were right about him."

Her big brother opened his arms and she collapsed into them.
