BZZZZT BZZZZT
"Hey! I still got a cellphone!" Marv said delighted.
He could've sworn it would have been disconnected by now! He hadn't been able to pay his cellphone bill for the past two months, since his mom had asked him to help her with the bills. Things got much more complicated when his cousin and her baby girl moving in. Marv kept telling his mother to stop picking up folks. It wasn't as if they weren't enough people in the apartment already! Food was already scarce and the bills kept pilling up!
"Yo!" he answered cheerfully.
"Hey Marv! It's Kelly." responded a cheerful female voice.
"Yeah, I know. I'm glad I still got a phone" he said with a chuckle.
He started the car and arranged his seat, moving his hands between his backpack, his cellphone and the car. He looked behind the steering wheel and cringed, he had less than 1/3 left before empty. He had to make the best of it til he got paid on Friday.
"So, am I" he heard a male voice at the other end of the line.
"Wait!" Marv said, stopping cold. He frowned, "Kaykay?"
"Yeah. Me and Kelly were just calling to make sure you were up." answered Matthew, son of Sergeant David 'Deacon' Kay.
"Yeah, are you on the way to school already?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Hold up! This some kind of intervention I 'on't don't bout?" Marv said with an accusatory note. He tilted his head back, frowning, surprised by his friends' intentions.
He heard a soft giggle from the other two teenagers at the other end of the line.
"Yeah" Kelly said confidently.
"Kinda" Matthew added.
"What the...y'all got some nerve!" Marv complained, as the others giggled.
"C'mon, Marv, we're just looking out for you." Kaykay said
"Yeah, we just wanted to make sure you were heading to school." Kelly added.
"What? Y'all don't trust me or something?" Marv asked, turning on the car.
"Is that your car I hear?" Kelly asked.
"You dragged your feet out, didn't you?" Karkay asked.
"Kaykay, you better be quiet, boy!" Marv snapped, annoyed.
"C'mon, Marv! We can understand it's hard, but we gotta make the academy together." Kelly answered.
"Yeah, if we plan to get to SWAT, we gotta get through senior year first!" the young Kay added.
"Dawg, you sound just like Sarge!" Marv said, once again annoyed. he knew his friends meant well but they had no idea how heavy his heart felt.
"What?" Matthew asked lost.
"Did you talk to him?" Kelly asked.
"Yeah...pinned me down at work. Caught me having a cold one with some homies. Scared the crap outta me!" Marv said heading out of the parking lot.
"What?" both teenagers asked in disbelief.
Marv stopped at a red light. Now, he found himself reminiscing....
"Yo Marv! We tired as hell. Let's chill out!" his homie Mike called, quickly followed by Antwone. Both were on their way out.
On queue, all three yanked the blue vest off their chest and made a ball out of it. They were clearly not in the best mood. It was no surprise, since they had just pulled almost 12 hours in the mega store. They were tired and then some!
