Beep, beep, beep. That's what Ally heard as she came out of her sleep. That, and then her mother's voice.
"Ally, sweetie, we're here. Everything's going to be okay. Don't worry."
And then she fell asleep again.
"...realize there's going to be some physical therapy needed, but other than that..."
Ally was constantly drifting in and out of reality and it was almost two weeks till she was fully conscious. Her eye lids fluttered open, loudly welcomed by the fluorescent lights.
"Mom? Dad?" She croaked weakly, trying to sit up, but failing.
"Ally, I'm here. Your moms gone to the store to get more snacks. Don't try to get up you're still too weak." She heard her dad say softly.
And like always he was right. Her limbs felt like jelly and her brain has definitely had better days. But she slowly nodded.
"When can I go home?" Ally asked, hoping it was soon.
"Possibly tomorrow at the least but the doctors are still unsure." Her dad responded hesitantly, as if he wasn't even sure.
This kind of thing was for Ally's mom. And she wasn't here. Ally wanted her mom. For her dad's sake though, she willed a slight smile. A few minutes later, her mom was walking through the door.
"You can't believe how long the line was and the parking lot was jam - you're awake!" Her mom began but then rushed to Ally's side.
"Oh Ally, I'm so glad you're awake. We love you so much." Her mom say, stroking Ally's hair away from her face.
"Mom, I'm fine. Really, I promise." Ally reassured, reaching for her mom's hand.
Her mom only half smiled, squeezing Ally's hand in return.
"There are some things your dad and I need to tell you." Ally's mom said, all signs of smiling gone.
And that's when Ally noticed how tired they both looked. The red, puffiness under their eyes, as if they've been crying for a very long time. The bruising along her dad's arms. Ally slowly nodded, trying to prepare for what was next. But it still wasn't enough.
