What is this event about?

The Yule Ball is a formal celebration held on December 25, beginning at 8 PM and running until midnight. Being a traditional part of the Triwizard Tournament, it is held by the school hosting the Tournament and falls between the first and second tasks of the Tournament. The Ball is kicked off by a formal dance between the Triwizard Champions and their dates, a detail which notably caused quite a bit of distress for Harry Potter. The event provides the opportunity for students from all the participating schools to socialize and is open to students in their fourth year and above, though younger students may also attend as a guest of one of the older students.

The Book vs. the Movie

❆ In the book, Snape does not attend the Yule Ball, however his presence is noted in the film.

❆ Parvati and Padma Patil, sisters and Yule Ball dates to Harry and Ron (respectively), belong to Gryffindor and Ravenclaw in the books but are both in Gryffindor in the film.

❆ The Weird Sisters played at the Ball in the books, however, due to a legal dispute between the Canadian bank Wyrd Sisters, Warner Bros. removed all references to either group.

Fun Facts

❆ Producers limited the inclusion of Daniel Radcliffe's dance scenes from the waist down, preferring to include shots from the waist up to avoid his stumbling feet. His hectic filming schedule prohibited him from attending all three weeks of dance classes scheduled for the cast, and his presence in only four of these classes left him stumbling throughout the dance scenes.

❆ Emma Watson tripped on her dress and fell down the stairs in one of the first takes of her "Cinderella Moment".

❆ None of the couples that attended the Yule Ball ended up together.

❆ There is a deleted scene of the film in which Harry is attempting to ask Cho to the Ball but reaches her too late as she leaves with her friends.

❆ Perhaps a more entertaining deleted scene treats viewers to a full rendition of the song "Do the Hippogriff" performed by the band that shall not be named and Professor Flitwich crowd surfing among students.

❆ Warner Brothers Themed Entertainment and Fever have teamed up to host a real Yule Ball in multiple cities in recent years. Current locations include Houston, Montreal, Mexico City, and Milan. Two hosts and four House representatives guide guests through a Harry Potter inspired venue that provides entertainment in the form of engaging dances (apparently House dances are a thing), wizard-themed food and drinks, and the chance to shop for gifts, robes, and wands. Unlike in the books or movie, however, the event only lasts two hours and is held in November.

❆ The Yule Ball is often noted as a defining moment in Ron and Hermione's relationship and the transition from friends to lovers

❆ The Yule Ball is often noted as a defining moment in Ron and Hermione's relationship and the transition from friends to lovers. The fact that Ron and Hermione do not attend together is especially important as it allows for jealousy to rear its head and for Ron to come to terms with his previously unacknowledged attraction to Hermione.

❆ According to a behind the scene, Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy got dressed up for the Yule Ball scene like everyone else but sadly, he didn't get any screen time for this sceen on the movie.
