I tuned my mother out as she continued to talk about how big the wedding will be and how many people were coming.

I nodded when I knew she would want a response but everything she says enters my ear and exits the other.

My heart has been heavy since everything was finalized. I knew I was going to marry since I was a child. I always fantasized about what my wedding would be like. My person waiting at the end of the aisle for me with the biggest smile on their face.

Watching Alia marry Leo gave me hope that it would be as wonderful as theirs.

But now I dreaded it.

I wasn't excited as I thought I'd be. It turns out that however long you plan a dream wedding, it won't matter when the person in the end isn't who you want it to be.

Getting older is sad and depressing.

I sighed.

"What was that Carina?" I looked up to see my mother looking at me.

"Oh um." I turned to Charles but he only shrugged with a roll of his eyes.

I can't even rely on this ass. I shook my head, "Nothing mother," I finally said.

My mother sighed, "Are you even taking this seriously? This is going to be a huge wedding Carina. Second to the Princess' wedding, are you getting how serious this is?" She gave me the look she always gave me as a child when she finds me a pain in her ass.

I clenched my jaw, "I'm sorry mother," I mumbled.

My mother's lips tightened before she sighed, "Let's talk about the banquet instead," she said and went back to pacing.

I winced, "That's not really necessary mother." No one does an engagement banquet. Only Princess Alia had one. My mother is really making my wedding as grand as the Princess of Credia's wedding.

She turned to me again, "It's a banquet dedicated to your engagement, of course it's necessary."

I counted to three before answering calmly, "Of course."

My mother stared at me and studied my face, "You used to be so excited about weddings and marriage."

I shrugged and looked down, "That's before I knew it wasn't as magical as books portrayed them out to be," I said quietly.

My mother sighed and kneeled in front of me and touched my leg softly, "I'm sorry you have to find out this way honey. I was the same way when I had to marry your father, but it went okay in the end. Yours will too," she gave me a sad smile.

I stared at my mother's beautiful face with a few wrinkles that never seem to lessen her beauty.

I sighed, "Thanks, mother." I said even though it didn't make me feel any better. My mother and father's marriage is the one I wanted to avoid. They didn't love each other, they only tolerated each other's existence and did what everyone expects them to do.

That's not what I want.

I want something deeper than that. Something to look forward to every day. Someone waiting for me at home every day. And not just there for convenience but because she wanted to.
