I slammed my fist on the steering wheel after Evelyn ran out the car. I let my temper get ahead of me again and now she probably thinks I am like all those rumors. Speeding away from the city I headed back to Abigails house.

Parking the car I entered the house "Luke! Haven't seen you in a while" Amber boosted when I walked inside the kitchen

"Nice to see you" I greeted going outside. Abigail was standing by her outdoor tables cleaning up a few things before she noticed me

"Hey, Abigail" I said opening my tool bag. Squatting on the floor she hit the back of my neck with a newspaper "Owwww! Abby what was that for?" I yelled turning around

"Why is my grand baby crying saying you blew up on her in the car?" she said hitting me again. I got up and started pleading that she hear me out

"I'm sorry! I let my temper take control when she asked about my childhood. You know everyone likes to talk shit and she that pig Walter was giving information about me and I lost it" I  explained in a single breathing praying she wouldn't hit me again

"Luke we've talked about this! You need to think before you speak! Evie don't know nothin bout this town so you cant judge her for asking questions" Abigial stressed walking away

She had a point Evelyn only knew what others told her and she asked me an easy question. I slapped my head disappointed by my actions getting out my head I started working on the rest of fences. I would pick Evelyn up and apologize

...

"Daddy when will Evelyn get in the car?" Landon asked again for the 5th time

"Landon, were on our way to pick her up now" I answered

"Then we can go to the carnival!" he cheered in the back seat. I promised him we would go after I dropped Evelyn off. We meant to go last weekend but work got busy

"Yes then we'll go" I answered him

"Do you... like Evelyn" jerking the car a bit I was started coughing shocked by question

"Uhhh, yea she's a cool friend" I told him wondering what he meant by that

"Really! I like her a lot too. She treats me nice and doesn't talk about you badly! She's also funny and related to Ms. Abigail who takes care of us" he beamed talking about Evelyn's family. Landon was an observant kid and it hurt he was noticing all of this at a young age.

I was grateful for everything Abigail does for us but I hated the way people in town careless acted around my son. They can say whatever they want to or behind my face but when they do it in front of Landon... it starts to become personal

Driving up to the building I watched her walk down the stairs coming towards the car. I felt bad about this morning after Abigail popped me I really though about how I could apologize.

"Hi guys" Evelyn greeted sitting in the passenger seat. Landon started rambling about school and she listened wholeheartedly nobody but me has really done that. Since the day he could walk people treated him differently and barely gave him attention.

Driving away from the city I kept looking at Evelyn from the conner of my eye. She didn't seem anger anymore and was glued to her phone I thought it was the perfect moment to speak but Landon beat me to it

"Evelyn, are you coming to the carnival with us" my eyes almost popped out of my head. I never told him she was coming he knew once we dropped her off it would just be us

"A carnival?" she asked looking back at Landon

"Yea! My dad and I are going and.. and... you should come" he nervously asked. I didn't really think of inviting her because these were things Landon and I did alone. Savannah would say she would come but then we'd end up waiting on her to later getting a call that she wasn't going to show

"I have no plans tonight... I'd love to join. If your dad is ok with that" she said raising her eyebrow. Why would I not be ok with it?

"I don't mind" I grumbled not understanding why she would think that. I never said she couldn't come

"Mmmkay" she replied going back to typing on her phone. I pressed on the gas speeding to the carnival

...

"Landon hold my hand. We're crossing a street and you need to stay close" Evelyn said talking his hand into hers as they walked towards the entrance. I felt my heart thump at the action its been a long time since anyone has treated him with such care.

Landon had a huge smile on his face as he snuggled closer to Evelyn. I walked behind them and watched the two talk about who knows what. Entering the fair there were crowds of people everywhere

"Hey buddy they got a Farris wheel here" I said pointing to the big wheel at the end of the lot

"No way! Can we get on it?" he jumped with joy

"How about getting on before we leave. There are other games you should try" Evelyn added in. He shook his head in agreement as we walked around looking for a fun activity. Landon ran to one of the booths and found a fun spray gun game. I gave the man a couple of dollars and watched him go at it

"You know... I never got an apology"
