"Jesus fucking Christ." Daniella cursed as she wiped the sweat off her forehead. She was praying for the rest of her shift to be over so she could get home and then to Marlene.
'Home'.
That word's been rubbing her the wrong way for the last twenty years. Came to Boston for a year and never left, how ironic.
"Don't take the lord's name in vain."
The brown-haired woman scoffed and turned around, facing the female behind her. "Fuck off Kathy." She spat out, continuing to work on the machines FEDRA so desperately needed to fix.
"Apologize." Kathy, fifty-something years old snob hissed. "You took the lord's name in vain."
Daniella blinked, lost for words at first, not knowing when Kathy got the audacity but then she scoffed. "Fuck you and your lord Kathy, I admire you for still holding on to your beliefs but seriously? It's been twenty years and you're still in this hell hole."
"You bitter child." The woman shook her head and looked at her with pure hatred in her eyes. "You'll always be alone thanks to your behavior."
Dani's amused smirk turned into a frown as she watched the woman go back to her work, no longer paying her any attention. "Old hag." She whispered to herself before taking off her gloves and putting them back on the metallic table. "I'm done for today." She walked towards one of the guards and showed him the palm of her hand, ready for her reward. "C'mon Adam, you know I deserve way more than that."
The younger guard looked down at her and then at the four pieces of paper in her hand. "You fucked up the last order Daniella, be happy that you're getting something." He hissed through gritted teeth.
The brunette glared at him and left without saying anything else. She was positive for maybe four years after the outbreak, hoping that something positive would happen but no, twenty years have passed and she was still in the same shit hole.
She was alone and she was...bitter. Daniella found it extremely difficult to admit it to herself but she did it eventually. She celebrated the 'old' age of thirty-nine all alone a couple of months prior, in her shitty apartment that had a filthy odor for the last two years.
No friends, no lover, no family, no nothing. Daniella got used to being completely alone but that did not mean that she liked it.
Her eyes followed every single movement on the street she walked through, years of danger training her to be cautious and suspicious. She saw one of the firefly's logos being painted over, an unhinged scoff leaving her mouth.
