It's been quiet ever since they left Boston behind. Quiet but uneasy, neither of them really expected to stay with each other for more than a day, and now they were on their fourth day together.
They walked in silence mostly, Tess' death still occupying their minds. Daniella saw the guilty look in Joel's eyes more than she could count and she knew that somehow he was blaming himself for Tess' passing. And the woman wanted to console him but they were practically strangers and it was almost impossible to get Joel to open up or even speak.
So he stayed silent the most but Ellie occasionally said something and Daniella occasionally answered. And then they went quiet again.
And now they were waking up in the middle of the woods. Daniella enjoyed it though, she had always liked spending time in nature.
And Ellie seemed ecstatic about the world that was left unexplored behind the QZ walls. She was listening to everything the woman had to say about the woods and the plants they found on the way.
It surprised Joel a little too. He knew that Daniella was a skillful person but he had no idea that the woman was that good at surviving in nature. He made a mental note in his head about every single wild plant and its benefits that Daniella mentioned.
But Ellie did that too. She started to grab some of the plants Daniella was showing her, just to be 'safe'. A few leaves of Plantain were scrunched in her backpack just because Daniella said that it was great for cuts.
But Ellie's favorite thing was wild fruit. It was their second day on the road when Daniella disappeared while Joel was making a fire and then showed up with her flannel shirt filled with blackberries.
"Holy shit, what is that?" Ellie grinned when Daniella put the clothing on the ground proudly. "Can I eat it?" She grabbed one, examining it up close.
The woman sat on the ground and grabbed one as well. "These are called blackberries, probably the last ones of the season." She popped one of the berries into her mouth and chewed on it with a smile on her face.
"It's sweet." The young girl snorted and grabbed another one. "Did you use to eat this before the world went to shit?"
Daniella leaned against one of the trees, her eyes falling on Joel, who watching them with an unknown look in his eyes. "When I was a kid I used to eat wild berries all the time." She then admitted and handed some of the fruit to Joel, knowing that he would probably never grab it by himself.
Joel kept his gaze on the woman before putting the fruit closer to his lips, doing his best to savor it.
