Y/N's POV
We slip a pair of scrubs over our clothes and Newt throws a lab coat on. I take a cap to cover my hair and a mask to cover my face. Newt does the same with his face. "How do I look?" I question holding my arms out as a signal for him to answer. I see his cheeks lift underneath his mask. "Beautiful." My heat sinks before he hold his hand out. "Ready?" A real smile appears on my face. "Ready."
We scan the hallways before exiting into the herd. Many nurses and doctors storm the halls as the fire alarms continue to go off. I'm not sure how I didn't hear them before. I guess my mind is somewhere else. Maybe focused on the man back from the dead. I can't think about that now. I need to focus because one screw up and this is over. We duck into a corner that leads to a dead end. I pull my mask down breathing heavily still exhausted from Wicked extracting serum from my body. "You alright love?" He takes my shoulders into his hands. I start coughing from the running as I begin feeling a stinging pain in my chest. My legs are weaker now, trembling. I'm not sure if adrenaline is wearing off, but it's hurting. "I just need a second." Newt searches my face then down my body. "You're very pale. Sit down." He tries to urge me down to the ground. I shake my head, "There's no time. We need to get to the others." My breathing is jagged, and I know it's worrying him. "We'll never get to the others if you can't walk." The fire alarm suddenly stops and panic rushes through me. "That was our distraction right? It's over now. We need to go!" I insist pulling my mask back up. Newt does the same as we make our way back to the main hallway.
We go at a slower pace this time as a way to draw less attention to ourselves. I know he's going slower for me too. We are almost to the elevator. Then we can get to Rowan's car and make our escape. I turn my head glancing at all of the rooms were walking past. They're all empty with windows that give a full view of the room.
Our pace slows in the lobby. There are many people, nurses, doctors, patients waiting for further instruction from the fire alarm. I guess by now everyone knows it was a hoax, but I'm not sure if they know who did it yet. Newt takes my hand gently as he begins leading us through the crowd. I keep my head down pushing through the sharp pain in my body. We exit the sliding door making a run for it. The sun is finally up signaling a whole night without rest. Going full speed down the entrance way stairs is not ideal, but we just need to get out of here. "There they are!" Newt points to Rowan standing outside of his black car swinging the keys around his finger. I peel the mask from my face while releasing the ridiculous cap from my head. Rowan perks up when he sees us running, then freezes when we make eye contact. We finally make it to him as Aris get out of the passenger seat. Once we come to a stop, the coughing fit starts up again making it hard to stand. Newt instinctively grabs onto my waist to keep me from falling to the concrete. "Y/N? What the hell?" Rowan exclaims. Without warning, Aris engulfs me into a hug, protectively gripping the back of my head. "You." He pulls me away scanning my face. "You were dead." Before I can say anymore, Rowan turns to us with fear. "Reunion later. Get in the car. People are coming." Aris nods rushing back to the passenger seat. Newt quickly runs to the other side, taking the seat behind Aris. Rowan looks at me intensely with an emotion I can't quiet read. He opens my door, helping me in, then gets inside the car himself. The ignition starts as Rowan turns to us. "Where am I going?" He says looking at everyone individually. "I'll show you! Just drive!" Aris shouts. Rowan pulls the car into reverse and speeds to the exit of the parking lot. I look into the rear-view mirror to see Rowan staring at me. "Whenever we get to wherever we're going, I need to take a look at you." He aggressively makes a left turn flinging my body over towards Newt's. "Could drive a little more gentle." I say sarcastically as his next turn pushes Newt and I to the other end of the back seat. "Trying to shake the cops right now." Rowan makes another sharp turn. I look back seeing Wicked security vans and cars following close behind. "Why exactly do you need to check up on her?" Newt questions Rowan with annoyance laced in his tone. I watch as Newt and Rowan make eye contact in the rear-view mirror. "She died, right? Y/N, you were dead for over ten minutes." Rowan swerves to not hit another car next to us. "People don't just die and come back to life without resuscitation. Which is why I need to make sure your vitals are okay." Rowan makes eye contact again with me in the rear view. This time he doesn't break the eye contact. He's just looking out for me right? He doesn't think anything else is going on between us? I look over at Newt who is slightly glaring at the young doctor. "Rowan! Look out!" All attention is pulled forward to a busy intersection. Our light is red, but there is no way to stop now with how fast we're going. I brace the seat before smashing with an impact so strong it's hard to stay put. The car begins to flip once, twice, three times, until I lost count. The car lands on its side as both Newt and I are tangled between one another. The glass around is completely shattered as I feel a stinging sensation around my whole body. "Is everyone okay?" Aris calls out. I attempt to sit up dusting the shards of glass on top of me. "I'm okay." I replay. Rowan coughs at the smoke filling the air. I glance over to the British boy next to me. He's completely still. "Newt!" I shout taking his head into my hands. My eyes scan over him, his eyes shut, cuts everywhere, and chest completely still. "No! Not again!" I shout putting my fingers on his neck to feel a pulse. Thankfully, I feel a very faint pulse underneath his skin. I take a deep breath of relief, taking his head back into my hands. "Newt." I speak quieter stroking his cheeks with my thumbs. "Wake up." His eyelids squint, as if to get rid of a headache, and he opens his eyes. "Are you okay?" I question firsthand although I'm not sure he understands what I am saying. "We have to go." Rowan pushes his door open escaping to the top of the disaster. "What happened?" His British accent flows through my ears. "You're bleeding." Newt states putting his hand to my face. "I'm fine. Can you walk? We gotta go." He smiles, "I'll manage."
Aris helps me pull Newt out of the opposite door of the tipped car. I look around to see crowds surrounding us and Wicked guards surrounding with their guns up. The sun shines bright making it hard to focus on the people around us. After my eyes adjust, I see none other than Mason starring directly at me. The Wicked recruiter from Amanda's city is standing next to him with a giant black eye. People are whispering and fearful. "Y/N. A disastrous way to make a scene. As always." Mason shouts for everyone around us to hear. Aris jumps down from the car helping me down. I walk forward towards Mason as Aris helps Newt down as well. Rowan stands a couple of feet to my left. "Just let us go Mason! We got what we came for, now let us live in peace!" I try reasoning with the man. He laughs as if all of this is some funny prank. "You really think I'm just going to let you go? After all of this?" I roll my eyes paying no attention to the civilians around me. "Please, you weren't going to let me go either way." The crowd is quiet, and I know anything I say will be heard. I look to my left seeing a news reporter recording all of this. "Mason. Just stop this. Why does Wicked have to be the one to make the cure?" I shout extra loud to make sure I am heard. "Don't fight this Y/N." Mason warns. "Fight what? The truth?" My words cause whispers among the crowd. "You are a terrorist intruding in my city." Mason fires back. "Can't you see that he's lying to you?" I shout directing my voice to the crowd. "The only reason we were in that city was to save my best friend who was taken by your men! We didn't attack the city!" Mason laughs at my attempt. "Please. You're just trying to cover your own ass. Just come with us easy, and we can make a deal." The crowd remains stuck between our accusations. "What? Go with you just to kill me like you almost did the first time? Admit it, Mason! I flatlined! And you had no idea what to do. How you would explain to the people that you almost killed me trying to extract too much serum." There were a couple gasps in the audience. Before he could talk, I continued, "Speaking of covering one's ass. What am I to you? Wicked creates a real cure to hide what horrendous things you're doing to obtain the daily injections? Is that right?" I got him now. Mason stares back at me with rage behind his eyes. I carry on paying my attention back to the citizens around me, "Haven't any of you wondered where your daily injections come from? If Wicked will do anything to create a cure for the plague wiping the Earth, then where could they possibly find enough serum to inject every citizen in this city?" I've got each person whispering to one another. "Turn off the camera." Mason points to the reporter. I chime in, "No! Don't you see what he's trying to do? He's trying to cover up what's going on behind closed doors. The shit that none of you know about. Right Mason?" I turn my head to look in his direction. I've got you now you son of a bitch. I watch him whisper to armed guard next to him. "What Mason? Scared to tell everyone the truth? Scared they will see who you really are?" Suddenly, a gunshot fires causing each person gathered to crouch in fear. Hoping he fired into the air, but I know that's not the case. Gasps escaped many mouths around as I look down at my body, expecting to see a wound. My heart beats faster realizing that I was not hit. I turn my body to look at the three guys behind me. Rowan, Newt, and Aris. Scanning each one of them. My eyes lock with Aris', and that's when I feel it. The drop of my heart once my eyes land on the blood-soaked shirt around his torso. Screams fill the air. People probably scared for their own lives. Not worried about the boy Mason's gunman just shot. I gasp rushing to Aris as he loses balance. Newt catches his fall before I can get to him. My hands instantly grab his face seeing the immense amount of pain in his eyes. "No, no! Aris, you stay with me. Please, stay with me." My teary eyes lock with his, now dripping onto his neck. I look down, seeing the blood coming from the middle of his stomach. I look up to Rowan as he stares down at us, "Don't just stand there!" I demand unable to control my own emotions, "Rowan, do something!" I yell before returning my attention to the boy I've always known. The one who's always been there. "Y/N." Aris manages to whisper. I shake my head, not ready to accept a goodbye. Not ready to face the everlasting hell Wicked has put us all through. "Don't talk, Aris. We are going to help you. We are going to fix this." Aris shakes his head. I look up to Newt who is on the other side of him holding his wound tight. "You need to go. Get to the others and get out of here." Aris' skin is pale, and I know deep down what he is asking of me. "Absolutely not! I am not leaving you! I can't leave you." I shake my head in disbelief. "Y/N, I am so glad that I got to be a part of one more adventure." Aris pauses between some of his words. "Get out of here. Finish what you started. Do not shut down because of me." The heartache pulls at me as if I am in the middle of a spinning wheel. Dizzy and dazed. "I can't do this without you." Aris grabs my hand as I notice the amount of sweat building on his exterior. "You can! You are strong," He begins to cough. "I have always looked up to you, as has everyone around us. Push to the end and don't look back." His breathing is heavy and irregular. I almost forgot about the crowd of people watching me say goodbye to my best friend. He stares up at the blue sky as his last breath escapes his mouth. "Aris," I try shaking him. "Aris! Please wake up!" I feel a hand lay on my shoulder. I look at his lifeless body, wishing I could go back. Wishing I would have made him stay on the island. Wishing he was never recruited in the first place. Wishing none of this would have happened. I struggle to stand, the grief building like weights tied at my ancles. The blur of people standing around, witnessing murder. Everyone standing, but no one attempting to do anything. I lay eyes on Mason, as I see the fault in his eyes. A piece of guilt on him, but it is deeply hidden behind a sense of leadership. "Don't you see who you are working for?" I direct my words to the crowd and the news reporter still broadcasting on live. "He was innocent!" My cheeks red and eyes continuing to pour every ounce of emotion inside of me. "He wasn't even armed!" I shout with anger and frustration. "This is what Wicked does! They kill to get what they want! And if this isn't proof enough... then I don't know what is." There is a silence through the crowd. A loss of words and energy. "That's enough!" Mason tries before my eyes snap to his presence. "What are you going to do? Shoot me too?" Disbelief overcomes his expression before someone in the crowd yells, "They're just kids!" Mason's head twists to the direction of the voice. "Yeah! What about our own kids? They we're promised to be protected!" A woman's voice joins in. The crowd begins to swarm Mason and his troops. Chaos breaks as people voice their questions and concerns about Wicked. The crowd is much bigger than I thought as people end up shoulder to shoulder with me. "Have we been lied to this whole time?" One man accuses. "I want to know where my kids are!" A woman demands. Before I can hear anymore, I feel someone grab my hand. I turn to see Newt intensely making eye contact with me. "We need to leave." I know it's for the best. Probably our only chance to get away from the Wicked guards. "I don't want to leave him, Newt. I can't." Before I can say anymore, he pulls me towards him placing his chin on my head. "I'm sorry love." The anger breaks into sorrow, and my head throbs at the thought of leaving his body behind. Newt gently rubs my back. "Rowan covered his body with a blanket he had in his car, but the car itself is totaled. We have to get to the others on foot." I don't want to face it, but he's right. The only way we will make it to the Warehouse is if we leave now while the mob of people distracts Mason and his people. "Aris cared for you so much, Y/N. But we have to leave now." I pull away from him, the man I have always loved, knowing that I have to leave Aris behind. I simply nod. My body aches. My mind races. I let Newt lead me out of the crowd. He leads me to Rowan, who is next to his flipped car with our bags. I walk over to Aris' covered body. I flip up the blanket, giving him one last look over. His eyes are closed now, his face is still. I kiss his forehead before placing the blanket back over him. Then I stand, grabbing all the bags I can get, and I begin walking in the direction of the Warehouse without saying a word more.
