🌈JIMIN PO

Naturally I couldn't be running around much with such a little kitten and one who needed special treatment.

Bam named after my favorite actress was an unusual
orange female cat.

I learned that from the vet
when I took her in for a checkup.

Nearly all orange cats were
male but she'd be special no matter what.

Her only issue was a little dehydration and for that he suggested subcutaneous fluids
to be administered every eight hours for a few days.

Not thrilled to leave her behind but glad to do whatever Miss Bam needed, I kissed her head and started for the door but
he called me back.

"Where are you going?"

"Uh...didn't you say she needs treatments every eight hours?"

Surely he didn't expect me to bring her in three times a day, around the clock.

Not that I wouldn't...

"Yes but you can't administer
the fluids without some instruction."

"If you two will wait here, my assistant will be right in to give you a demonstration and a class in subcutaneous fluids 101."

Honestly, I didn't even know what they were.

My last pet had been before leaving home and my folks
had been in charge of their medical care.

If Won the dog ever needed anything like this, I hadn't
known about it.

But the doctor passed over
my baby and pointed to the
chair in the corner.

"Sit. Cuddle. Wait."

"She'll get you set up with bottles and formula and give
you the 411 on the rest of
caring for a three-week-old kitten."

"Thre—that sounds very
young."

Crap.

what if I made a mistake?

Her little kitty face was tipped
up to me, green eyes sharp
and focused for such a baby.

"It is."

I waited but he didn't say any thing more, I don't know what
I expected.

Maybe something along the
lines of not to worry, every
thing would work out fine?

But he couldn't promise
that, could he?

After a long moment, I let out
a breath and stroked Bam's forehead.

"Okay, send in the teacher."

"We're ready to learn."

As the vet left, I murmured.

"I've got you, bam."

"We'll do this together."

The instructions were even more daunting than the idea of them.

Having to use a needle on such
a small animal when I'd never handled one before terrified me but Cherry, the vet tech, was patient and helpful and by the time I left, I was at least sure
I knew the mechanics.

As I gathered up my kitten
and the large bag of supplies,
Cherry turned away then back and gave me a friendly squeeze on the arm and a piece of
torn paper.

"My cell phone."

"Day or night, okay?"

"Miss Bam found you and we're going to make sure you have
a long, happy life together."
