Sydney Mccall had a car. Which isn't all that out there for a high school sophomore, but it was worth noting that the Mccalls most definitely could not afford to buy the twins a car.
The impressive part was that Sydney paid for it herself. It wasn't brand new, but it was hers. She worked from the summer before freshman year everyday until half way through the summer before sophomore year to pay for it.
She worked at the music store, and with some flirtatious tips and just above minimum wage paychecks, she worked her way there. Her boss was a hippie who believed that minimum wage was cruel, but couldn't afford to pay her more than a couple dollars extra.
Truthfully, if it weren't for the girl desperately trying to sell her car, she wouldn't have been able to afford it.
She stepped out into the parking lot, and a familiar boy caught her eye. It was like a stab to the stomach.
She could almost feel the ghost of him pass through her.
Brady.
He was walking with a girl, and she didn't mean to, but she stared.
When his eyes flickered her way, she quickly walked off toward the school. She couldn't let him see her falter. If he was happy and carefree, she had to do the same.
On her way into the building, she bumped into her brother and Stiles.
"Woah, woah." Stiles said. "What's the hurry?"
"Sorry." She mumbled, not sparing them another word before walking away into the building.
They turned their heads, both looking for what might be the cause of her behavior.
"Oh." Scott said, nodding his head over to Brady.
"Dude, he's such a dick." Stiles remarked.
"I'm aware." Scott nodded. "She just mopes around the house all the time, it's kinda depressing."
"You know she said them same thing about you." Stiles remarked.
"Yeah, but Syd doesn't mope. She's really hurt this time." He sighed. "I wish I could help, but I just don't know how."
-
To put it simply, Sydney had a bad day. Normally when she had a bad day she would ask her mom to make Mac and Cheese and watch Gilmore Girls or sneak in to play video games with Scott, but her mom was working a double and Scott was with Allison. So, it was just her, a Kraft Easy Dinner, and Rory Gilmore. She was always team Tristan, but she was starting to see the appeal in Jess.
Scott and Stiles came stumbling in. "Hey Sydney!" Stiles sung.
She groaned, pausing the TV. "What?"
"We know the perfect way to cheer you up." Scott grinned.
She looked plainly at him. "What makes you think I need cheering up?"
He pointed out the bowl of Mac and Cheese and the show playing on the TV in front of her. "I know you Syd. This is what you do when you're sad."
"Fine, whatever, maybe I'm a little sad." She shrugged.
"That's why we're here. You love a good mystery." Stiles explained.
"What is it?" She asked.
"Bloody bodies in the back of an ambulance and possibly Lydia?" He suggested.
She stood up. "I'm in, let me put real clothes on."
Scott and Stiles shared a fist bump as Sydney ran to get dressed.
-
The three teens were crouched in the trees, looking into the bloody ambulance.
"What the hell was Lydia doing?" Stiles questioned.
"I don't know." Scott answered.
"What kept you from doing that? Was it Allison?" Stiles asked.
"I hope so." He replied.
"Do you need to get closer?" Sydney suggested.
Scott paused, holding his nose a little higher in the air. "No, I got it."
He began to move, but Sydney grabbed the sleeve of his jacket. "I just, I need you to find her. Alright? Please Scott. Promise."
"I will." He nodded. "I promise."
Scott left, and Sydney let out a worried sigh. "Hey, it's gonna be fine." Stiles comforted. "Lydia's strong, she can handle herself."
"Alone in the woods? In the freezing cold?" She sassed.
"Well um—"
Sydney got up, dusting off the back of her legs. "It's no use to just sit here." She said.
"Okay." Stiles nodded, standing up beside her and walking toward the assortment of flashing lights.
They stood talking to Sheriff Stilinski, when something caught Stiles' eye.
He shook Sydney's arm, directing her to the figure in the woods. She looked up. "Lydia?" She was naked, dirty, and shivering, but it was her. "Lydia!" She said with relief.
In true Lydia fashion, she looked angrily at all the people standing around. "Well, is anyone gonna get me a coat?"
"Uh, yeah, yeah, here you go." Stilinski nodded, walking over to the girl.
Sydney smiled, running up and hugging Lydia. "I'm so glad you're okay."
