Dear Dad

Dear Dad,

You were absent during my
prepubescent days
in order to support our family.

Yet I still looked forward to
seeing you.

As I grew,
you missed my competitions
you missed my recitals
you missed my award shows.

You didn't need to miss those.
You had no reason to.

Instead, your convenience guided you.

It wasn't convenient to travel into the city
to see me win my first gold metal.
It wasn't convenient to miss work.

And there were moments when you were there.

But did Mom make you?

I am left to question what memories were your choice to create.

Dear Dad,

Why do I know exactly how your forgotten son feels?
