One of Karina's greatest struggles in the story is coming to terms with the butterfly effect caused by Tom's death. She sees how Jake is thriving beautifully in his new life, with the opportunity to experience walking again.
She is sincerely happy for him though but Karina can't help but reminisce of the times Tom and her would stay up late imagining what their life on Pandora would be like.
