The stop skill is a Dialectal behavioral therapy skill that is as simple as it sounds! STOP! That's all there is to it.  The first part of this DBT skill is to as follows:

S-Stop! Freeze! Do not react, don't move a muscle. If you act without thinking, your emotions are going to cause you to act impulsively. Stay in control.

T-Take a step back from the situation that is causing you to STOP.  Take a moment or a break, don't forget to breathe. Let go and do not let your feelings make you act impulsively.

O-Observe. Notice what is going on inside and outside of you. What is the situation? What are your thoughts and feelings? What are others doing or saying? What are your five senses?

P-Proceed mindfully. Act with awareness. When deciding what to do consider your thoughts and feelings, other peoples thoughts and feelings and behaviors, and the situation. Consider your goals.  Ask yourself this question: what actions will make it better or worse.
