It must have been about four o'clock when Musichetta came over that afternoon. I was sat in the window, having returned home from Marius's and the conversation with Eponine an hour or so earlier, continuing my work, when she knocked at the door. Much like last time, she had a bag full of papers, though there seemed also to be something heavy at the bottom of it, judging by the way it clanked when she put it down. As she greeted me, she pulled some of the papers from the bag, spreading them on the desk.

"I've borrowed some fashion plates from Claudine - the shop she works at were getting rid of some of the older ones, and she took advantage of that to sneak some of the more recent ones out too. We'll have to give them back to her, so she can return the most recent ones before their absence is noticed, but I thought they'd be useful as inspiration for hair dressing!"

"Claudine?"

"A friend of mine, from when I worked at the milliners. She still works there. They get the fashion magazines so that they can copy the fashionable trims on bonnets and dresses when ladies come in and want their older clothes updated to the latest fashion. You'll have to meet her at some point - she's lovely! I don't know if she's coming to the ball, but we could always include her if we put together a party of us to go to the theatre."

She continued chattering as I flicked through some of the pictures. Bigger sleeves and wider skirts with more decoration at the hem seemed to be becoming far more fashionable, though (what with not attending any belle assemblées or balls) I hadn't seen much in the way of fashionable evening dress recently, beyond the odd satirical cartoon. I had thought they were exaggerating women's hairstyles, but it seemed the gravity defying loops were just as tall in the fashion plates.
