In 1938, Britain and France, in an attempt to prevent another war in Europe, signed the Munich Agreement, which allowed the Nazis to annex the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia.

Czech President Eduard Benes resigned in despair and fled to England in response to this capitulation and within six months, Czechoslovakia's new president, Emil Hacha discovered that Hitler's designs on his country were not yet finalized.

On March 14, 1939, Hacha was summoned to Berlin and threatened with the destruction of his nation if he did not accept the peaceful incorporation of the rest of Czechoslovakia. Facing Germany with no allies, Czechoslovakia was forced to stand down her armies, and Germany occupied the country without a shot being fired.

A year later, Hitler invaded Poland, and the world was at war once again. The Czechoslovakia factories were seen as extremely important to the German war effort, but the output was hindered by resistance to German rule.

So Hitler sent his third-in-command to crush any resistance to the Nazi regime. 37-year-old SS Obergruppenfuhrer (General) Reinhard Heydrich, who was also known as The Butcher of Prague.
