You're sitting on a plane, on your way to Portsmouth to meet your ex-boyfriend, Mason. The last time you saw him was nine months ago.
You and him ended your four-year relationship nine months ago. The breakup was intense; both of you started losing your feelings for each other long before that; the spark and the love just wasn't there anymore, but you both were too oblivious to realize that, so it all ended with a ridiculous fight and a nasty breakup.
That night, you just needed to escape somewhere. You spontaneously booked a trip to Italy, thinking you could spend a few days there to clear your head, but little did you know, that trip changed your whole life.
You spent the last nine months in Milan; not only did you manage to get a job there, but you also found yourself a new boyfriend, and you're moving in with permanently. You didn't think a spontaneous trip after your breakup could lead to this, but you weren't complaining at all.
You had lost contact with Mason; you had removed his number, and you avoided social media and even the TV whenever your boyfriend was watching football at home. You just didn't want Mason in your life anymore.
That was until a few days ago. Lewis called you on a random night when you were out for dinner, but it wasn't Lewis when you answered the call; it was Mason. It was the only way he could reach out to you.
He told you he had tried to gain courage to contact you, and he asked you if the two of you could talk about the whole situation, to get closure.
At first, you were skeptical; you had moved on, and you had even found out from one of your friends that Mason was dating another girl. But you thought more about it, and maybe closure was what you both needed to move past for good.
Surprisingly, you decided to go back. You couldn't have this conversation over the phone, so you decided to travel back to Portsmouth, just for a day.
You had only brought a backpack—not even that was necessary for the trip, but just in case you needed it, and as soon as you landed, an Uber took you straight to the café where you and Mason met for the first time in 2019. It was a bit cliché, but to be fair, it was the only café with good coffee in Portsmouth.
You felt more nervous than tired; that phone call was enough to make you nervous, you couldn't even imagine how nervous you would be to see him in person after all these months.
But here you were.
You stepped out of the Uber, seeing Mason sit there outside in the sun. He had already ordered your favorite coffee.
At this very moment, you didn't feel anything but joy, for some reason. He looked happy, and you also looked happy; there was no grudge held against each other anymore.
"It's good to see you," he smiled as he reached out for a hug.
You hugged him back, "It's good to see you too, Mase." You returned the smile as you both took a seat in front of each other.
"I ordered your favorite," he said with pride
"Thank you," you said, keeping your smile on your face. "How are you? How are things going?" You asked, starting off the casual talk.
"I'm good; everything's good; how about you?" He asked, seeming a bit nervous. It was understandable; neither of you thought this was ever going to happen.
"I'm good too," you smiled before taking a sip of your coffee.
"Thank you for coming; I wasn't sure if it was a stupid idea or, you know..."
"There's no worries; I'm glad we can talk this through", you assured him.
He smiled sympathetically and nodded in agreement. "So...," he said, letting out a deep breath.
