THE NIGHT HAD passed quickly. Rae and Leon cleared the top floor while Jason and Shen May got the lower. It didn't take long at all for the White House to be clear. Now, Rae and Leon were standing in an open room beside Jason. Cleaners had come in to put the corpses in body bags to bring to labs all the while they cleaned the White House, now it looked good as new.
"Think it's the T-Virus?" Leon asked as the three watched workers in white suits extract a body in a body bag. The floor was clean under it, and the hall began to look less cluttered as cleaners finished up.
"We won't know till the lab checks it out." Jason responded, his arms crossed with a hard gaze. "More important question is, how the hell did zombies get in the White House?"
"Hmm." Leon hummed. He began to scan the walls and windows for any blemish or hint as to what happened. "And who's behind it?"
Rae turned to Jason, curious as to what he was looking at. He was looking over everything with a glare. She stared until he turned to her, his eyes keeping their dark gleam. Rae's gaze didn't falter, instead she just blinked.
Rae nudged Leon in order to make him look at her, and when Leon did, she said, "Let's go." She took her eyes from Jason and switched them to Leon.
"Following you." Leon waved her forward.
"Then keep up." Rae ordered, then began to lead the way through the White House. Leon followed her without hesitation, walking faster to walk by her side. He noticed her thoughtful glare that was observing everything they passed, and he wanted to ask her about it, but figured it would be better in somewhere more private.
It was when they were right in front of the exit that a female voice called out, "Uh, Leon? Rae?" It sounded familiar. It sounded like...
"Claire?" Rae perked up, abruptly stopping and turning around. It was there that she saw Claire Redfield in the flesh, having aged a bit from the last time they saw her but not that much. Rae quickly made her way back to the girl, "Wow. You look great, how are you?"
"Good. I'm good." Claire nodded, adjusting her stance. This allowed Rae to realize that she was holding a folder in her hand. Rae's eyes stayed on it only for a moment as Claire friendly inquired, "How are you?"
"Been better." Rae admitted with a voice far too happy for her negative words.
"What're you doing here?" Leon asked after trailing after Rae.
They hadn't seen Claire since a few days after Raccoon City. Sure, they emailed back and forth but it wasn't the same as before. They had all gotten busy with their respective careers.
"I'm here with reps from Penamstan's provisional government." Claire explained. "Just trying to get some schools and hospitals built."
"Penamstan?" Leon echoed in confusion.
"Yeah. The US wants a military presence there, so there's supposed to be some sort of signing ceremony next week." Claire paused for a moment before she raised the folder, "Um, hey, actually, could you two take a look at something?"
"Yeah." Rae nodded. Without a second's hesitation Rae took the folder that was handed to her.
Leon looked over her shoulder as Rae opened it, asking, "What's this?"
Rae lifted a paper from the folder, a drawing. There were multiple people on it, and detailed blood. It appeared as though they were fighting, but the drawings of the people reminded her more of zombies than of people. Looking closer, that was exactly what the people were. Last night's events flashed into her mind and her pleasant expression dropped as Rae looked up at Claire.
"A little boy drew them." Claire said, causing the couple to glance at each other with worried expressions. "They're what the civil war looked like six years ago."
Fire, shadows of people being hung in the distance, people screaming and shouting. Grey skin matched with red blobs against their cheeks. No pupils.
"Doesn't that look a lot straightened Raccoon City?" Claire questioned. Rae's lips tightened; it looked exactly like Raccoon City.
Rae handed the paper to Leon, who took it. But Rae didn't take her eyes off of it. Her breathing began to pick up as she tried to control her anxiety. After a closer glance he reached forward with his right hand. It landed upon her shoulder, and he rubbed the skin comfortingly. Rae took in a deep breath.
"I can't get anyone to go on record about what happened there. But after seeing those, I mean, it's gotta be another outbreak." Claire continued, blissfully unaware of what had happened just the night before.
Leon nodded, taking the photo in. "Hmm."
"You two. Clock's ticking. Let's move." Jason's voice was heard as he walked by the trio, not taking a second to slow his pace as he walked to the door.
Claire moved around the two to try and get a better look at the man. "Wait. Isn't that the guy everyone calls 'the hero of Penamstan'?"
"In the flesh." Leon answered. He handed the paper back to Claire, "Look, we've gotta go. Don't do anything stupid."
Then he turned the two of them around, beginning to walk towards the door. Rae followed, keeping her eyes on his back to ensure to herself that he was still there.
Claire sounded amused as she called after them, "Excuse me." The two got closer to the doors when Claire said, "Hey guys. Those outfits don't suit you."
Rae looked down at the suit she was wearing. She gave a breath like laugh and nodded in agreement. Then she said, "Take care of yourself Claire."
Claire sent her a warm smile, "You too."
