This might be confusing to some, cause there's a POV change, it's Grace's POV now...

This isn't my best chapter I've written but try to think of it as how she sees it, her shock and panic. Yeah.

TWs: mentions of abuse, suicide attempt, a bit gory

It's December twenty third. Kian has lived with me for almost a month now.

He told me weeks ago that he likes Elis, and not platonically. I wasn't surprised, given how those two look at eachother. And it seems like Elis and Kian are the only ones who don't see it, even though Elis is very bad at hiding it, if that's what he's trying do.

Don't get me wrong, I love Elis, but the guy has been ogling my best friend since Kian started at our school.

Before this fall, I'd never really been close to Elis. Sure, I used to date his best friend, Simon, but that didn't last long. Honestly, I was surprised when Simon came out, and he and Jack have been together longer than he has with any girl.

Anyway, when Kian started at Wayhild, I knew that he was gonna be a good friend. I also knew that he and Elis weren't going to be able to stay away from eachother. I saw how they looked at eachother even that first day in the canteen, when Simon wanted Kian to come sit with them.

Of course, I told Kian what an ass Simon is and he didn't sit with them. Until, of course, that time when Elis confronted me about Kian before lunch a week or so later. I had met Kian's dad, and that was when I was seriously starting to worry about Kian, so I told Elis what he wanted to know.

Now, I'm sitting on the floor of my bedroom and Kian is in my lap, crying his eyes out.

"It's okay," I'm whispering to him, stroking his dark hair.

"No, no," he's sobbing, "I'm so sorry. I love you. You mean so much to me, Grace, thank you so much."

I'm alarmed by his words, but also very warmed.

"You're welcome, though I don't know what you're thanking me for."

"You– you're one of my best friends. I'm so happy I met you, thank you so much for letting me be your friend."

"Oh," I say, and hug him closer.

After composing himself, Kian takes a deep breath and whispers, "Thank you," before leaving. I'm thoroughly confused by this interaction, but don't think much of it as I get ready to go to bed, since it was about time he broke down.

I wake up around nine thirty on Christmas Eve. Elis said he would leave about now, so I guess he's gone to Indianapolis. Who could've guessed he has big city cousins?

When I get to the bathroom, I find it occupied, so I go downstairs instead. Mom is in the kitchen, doing whatever moms like to do in the kitchen. When I come out of the downstairs bathroom again, I enter the kitchen.

"Hi mom," I say, before reaching across her and grabbing the coffee pot.

"Oh, hi, dear. Would you wake Kian up for me? We've got guests coming in an hour, so it would be great if he was up."

"Yeah, yeah, I'll go."

I groan as I make my way upstairs again and knock on Kian's bedroom door, but I get no answer, so I open it.

His bed is empty, but there's a letter on his pillow. I frown at it.

There's two papers, it says, The crumpled one is for Elis.

I furrow my brows even further and just ignore the label, opening the letter and taking out the crumpled paper. As I read the words, hastily scribbled down in Kian's writing, I feel my stomach tie into knots.
