I wake up the next morning bright and early.
Well... early. Not bright.
It's a gray day. The clouds are covering the sky in a great, big sheet, and everything feels drab and boring.
The morning dew soaks into the hems of my pants and wets my feet, making me uncomfortable as I walk through the ankle-high grass. I cover my mouth as a sleepy yawn escapes me, and I stumble towards the Med-jack's hut.
You know that feeling you get when you don't want to do anything except curl up on a soft, plush armchair with a good book and a cat on your lap, next to a roaring fire?
Yeah, I think you get the idea.
In spite of having a hot breakfast that consisted of oatmeal and steamed milk, I still haven't woken up fully, which is why I screamed when someone tapped me on the shoulder.
"Whoa! Hey!" The person stumbles backwards.
I spin around, my eyes wide. "You scared me to death."
Jeff chuckles. "Well, you seem alive to me." He pats my shoulder.
I sigh. "I'm sorry for screaming. I wasn't fully awake yet." I dig the heels of my palms into my eyes. "I guess I am now."
Jeff shakes his head. "No harm done." He unlocks the Medhut's door, opening it and walking in.
Clint walks into the Medhut as well, his hair wet. "In spite of getting up early every day for the past two years, I'm still not used to it." He grumbles, shaking his head like a dog, flinging droplets of water everywhere.
I laugh softly, walking in behind them. I look around at the neat, somewhat clean environment inside. "Wow. The inside looks way different from the outside." I comment, putting my hands in my pockets.
Jeff raises an eyebrow, turning to look at me with a curious expression. "How so?"
"Well, it's cleaner. And neater." I scuff my shoe against the dirt floor, glancing around at the beds and medicine cabinets. "The beds are made, and the stuff is organized. On the outside, it just looks like another stick hut."
He nods. "Well, this is the place where we take care of open wounds and injuries. It has to be sterile and orderly inside, otherwise we'd have less Gladers than we do now."
Clint adds, "Didn't your mom ever tell you not to judge a book by its cover?"
I shake my head with a slight chuckle. "I guess I learned my lesson on that." I sit down in an empty chair, crossing my legs. "So, what, do we just sit around, waiting for someone to get injured?"
Clint shrugs and leans against the wall casually. "Pretty much. Usually, Jeff and I play cards or checkers to pass the time." He chuckles. "We must have the most time off with our jobs than anyone else here."
Jeff stands up from his chair. "We do. But we have to teach her the basics."
Clint nods thoughtfully. "Where would we start?" He muses. "We don't have many newbies. Any, actually."
I just sit in my chair, listening to the exchange and watching them.
Jeff glances at me. "How about the medicines? We could teach her the names and what we use them for." He suggests, turning back to Clint.
I look up at Clint, an amused sparkle in my eyes. "Is he asking me, or you?"
Clint's lips curl up into a smile. "I'd say me." He turns to Jeff. "Yeah, that sounds like an idea."
*time skip bc I have no idea what any medical stuff is like except for how to put a bandaid on and clean a cut*
"So, yeah. That's pretty much it." Clint claps his hands together. "Any questions?"
