GENEVIEVE

My conscience was damned, thanks to the raven-haired man with a pair of emerald green eyes that reminded me of a forest and life.

Val was getting suspicious. She'd already asked me the other day if I was hiding something, and I couldn't tell her the truth.

The man was turning my life upside down and I could hardly bring myself to care. A little hope that my frail heart was building would devastate me in no time, and I'd have no one to blame except myself.

"I have told Morgan," Val's voice brought me out of my thoughts as we were heading towards the exit of our office. "What did you tell Morgan?" I asked, confused and distracted.

She shot me a dirty look. "Did you even hear what I've been talking about for the last fifteen minutes?" I shook my head at her question, and she rolled her eyes. "Nope. You talk boring," I said, teasing her.

"POV: How to say you're distracted without being obvious." Her words made me chuckle. Then I decided to ask again what she was talking about in the first place. "Anyway, what did you tell Morgan about, again?"

She sighs before opening her mouth to reply, "About my breakup with Andrea. Of course, I didn't tell him anything about Andrea and his..." She trails off, quite uncomfortable with whatever she wanted to say, "deeds."

I was almost about to tell Val that Andrea wasn't a rapist. He was framed. But then she would ask me how I know, and I'd have to reveal everything to her. So, before the words could leave me, I shut my mouth, walking ahead of her so she couldn't see the unease on my expression.

"I see. And what is your relationship with Morgan now?" A pang of guilt hit my gut because of the things I was hiding from her. If anything, she is my only best friend.

After a moment of silence, she replied from behind, "We are... friends. More than friends, actually," I could hear shyness in her voice, "but less than lovers."

More than friends and less than lovers... I gulped.

No.

I wouldn't say the same about Aleksandr and my relationship. Because it isn't like this. We didn't even start off as friends, for God's sake.

"I see. Good for you," I said. Val caught up with me. Her hand slid around my arm, a little smile on her lips. "Is he good?" I asked, and she nodded, her grin widening.

Then we were at the sidewalk of the road. And I thanked God that Aleksandr was not here today. He hasn't been coming to pick me up for a few days. I was relieved for that.

But something named disappointment lurked inside me, which I managed to ignore greatly.

"I think it's going to rain," Val suddenly said. Her words made me look up at the sky that was filled with clouds. A groan left my lips.
