Surrounded by the perfect predators

and the easiest of prey,

I survey my surroundings.

Studying ways of escape

and the least questionable paths.

Any mask of toughness dissolves away

the moment I reach for my keys.

Fumbling and frantic.

No one wants me to play in their poker game.

I see one predator with half of her head shaved

and her smaller equal drinking overpriced

lattes grunting and growling at a possible

alpha with lingering yellow eyes.

He pays no attention to me. Thank God.

A pack of sorority girls clad in magenta and white

swarm to their local bistro and pay no mind

to their waiter waddling to them for their attention.

I walk parallel to traffic--

foot and automotive.

I'm almost home now.

I'll be safe soon.

No one hunts for the quiet ones.

Spiders in the garden. She sees and hears all.
