"I must admit, Number Five. In all the time that I've been here, I've never met anyone quite like you." The Handler remarks.
We've successfully made it to Commission and I'm still feeling a little scared if I'm being honest. I just hope that she doesn't sense that I'm scared. I definitely feel like she'll use it against me and that would be bad.
"Hazel and Cha-Cha, for example, are talented, but...they can't see the big picture. Your spunk and enterprising spirit..." She pulls Five closer to her, which I can tell made him feel a little uncomfortable. "...it reminds me a great deal of myself, if I may be so vainglorious."
I roll my eyes. "Five is a billion times better than you'll ever be. So, shut your damn mouth."
"Oh." She stops and turns toward me. "I'm going to enjoy having you work here with us very much. That attitude is just...it's sugar for my soul." She bops me on the nose before continuing on with Five.
'Disgusting...' I mentally comment, as I wipe my nose off and run after Five and The Handler.
"If things work out for you here." The Handler glances back at me, then back in front of her. "The both of you could potentially make two fine successors."
We enter the building and I'm surprised at all the people that are in here. All these poor people have her as a boss. Working here has to suck ass, especially with her being the boss and all.
"I'd like to discuss the logistics of my family's safety at your earliest convenience." Five remarks, as we walk up some flights of stairs. "As well as our body replacements."
"Such chutzpah." She replies. "It's refreshing, I'll admit. Slow down, Five. All in good time. In fact, now that you've both finally agreed to work with us, we've got all the time in the world."
"Huh? How?" I ask, very confused. "The apocalypse is literally in four days. There's no time after the apocalypse."
She doesn't even answer me. We just walk into another room, which has a smaller room inside sectioned for holding all the briefcases.
"The Commission works in support of a delicate balance between the timeline of events and mankind's free will." She explains as we stop in front of the briefcase room.
"The briefcase is no longer part of your kit, Five. Free your mind." She turns around toward me. "However...it will be apart of yours. Once you're properly trained, of course."
I glance over at Five, then back at her. "So, you're splitting us up?"
"A home office worker and corrections division worker don't physically work together, but they do work with each other." She answers.
I raise an eyebrow. "You don't make any damn sense at all."
"Ah, but it makes all the sense in the world." She replies. "Now, your instructor's name is Hilbert and he'll be with you shortly. Come along, Five."
"Can I at least give her a hug?" Five requests, already walking over to me. "Wish her good luck on her training, even though she doesn't need it?"
"Quite the lovebirds, I see." She remarks. "Alright. Just...make it quick." So, Five hugs me, which I return, but there's something...off about this hug.
"I'll come get you." He whispers. So, he wanted to tell me something. "Just wait outside the room when the alarm goes off."
"You'll know where I'll be?" I whisper back.
"I've been here before, remember? I know exactly where you'll be." He replies.
I barely nod against his shoulder. He pulls away and walks back over to The Handler, whom I'm beginning to think doesn't even have a real name.
